high rpm......bad?
Re: high rpm......bad?
i was checking the resistance in the emv coils a little earlier after it was mentioned in another post.... the resistance is not infinate but its not 33... it was around 60 in both a and b.
does this mean i should go ahead and replace the tacho and emv?.... of is there something else i should check first?.........

Re: high rpm......bad?
looks indeed like they both have a few internal bits that don't work no more
but i'd also reccommend to get the belts tensioned and clutch adjusted soon, if the clutch is adjusted correctly then the car will take off at 2000rpm or so with the selector button pressed and "normal" under driving just above idle with a light tough on the accelerator pedal. with it starting to move at 1500rpm, it needs much and much more revs to get it off it's place
but; this mechanism is designed to allow you to change gear on a cold engine with choke applied and engine revs above normal idle, so the limit where it starts to move if you have the selector button pressed doesn't matter that much; as long as the system works.

Re: high rpm......bad?

thanks for the help

Re: high rpm......bad?
just to double check:............ until i get this problem fixed .... are you sure the car will be ok to take on the motorway?...... revs around 5000-5500 traveling aprox 50/55 mph?

The revs wouldn't worry me, the lorries on my bumper would.

Re: high rpm......bad?
I wouldn't suggest you make a habit of it, but a couple of hours like that shouldn't kill it. It'll probably run very happily afterwards, actually - the Italian tune-up!

Re: high rpm......bad?
Low hold switch in car not switched on or wires behind it touching each other are they? Easily switched on if people knock it from passenger seat while putting belt on or thinking it's the heated seat switch, wifes done it twice and she drives the car. Don't rely on the warning illumination light showing low hold is on as it may be blown.
Re: high rpm......bad?
no the low gear hold isnt on........ the bulb in it is new and doesnt light up even when i switch it on or off?......
would there be any potential damage caused by taking it on the motorway with revs that high?.....
im looking at driving from sheffield to manchester with it and im almost certain that i will need to make the journey before ive got t the bottom of this problem :S

Re: high rpm......bad?
Go over Woodhead and make use of the RPM
No, it shouldn't do any harm...just minimise such journeys.
Curious about the bulb not lighting up...
cheers

Re: high rpm......bad?
me too.... i think theres an electrical problem somewhere...... following the green books and various bits of asvice off people on here ... i think the 1st thing i need to do is switch the tacho and emv for ones that i know work,
and then see what problems i have (hopefully none)
the low gear ho;d switch has never worked as long as ive had the car, the wires at the back of the switch were not hooked up when i got it, ive also noticed that the throttle cable isnt origonal so theres probably something not right with the kick-down switch on there (but im buggered if i can find a genuine volvo replacement)
the emv has deffo failed tho.... it never sucks from either hose connector,,,, i tried removing the lil rubber bit from the inside of the overdrive side which allowed that side to suck but there was no noticable change when driving so i put it back on,
it would appear that the electromagnets on both sides have failed,
and i know theres something wrong with the tacho as the voltage remains constant on the kick-down side of the emv whatever the engine speed,

Re: high rpm......bad?
Have you checked fuses to make sure they are clean and power gets through them? The ones to check are fuses 8, 10 & 20. Fuse 20 operates the light and switch but all 3 work with the CVT system.
Re: high rpm......bad?
done some more checks following green books.... the book says that when you fully depress the gas peddal you should get voltage at terminal 2 of the tacho....... when i checked this i have constant voltage there??? does this mean its stuck in "low gear ratio" ??
