I think the different marks are different groups, I know Kar is a 7 as a '91, but an early GLT comes in around the same.
Basically, none of it matters, insurance group is the smallest factor in insuring any car. Mostly all that matters is where you live, your sex and age, and how long you've been driving.
GTi/SRi badge (real or stuck on) == plus £500
Volvo badge (real or stuck on) == minus £500
To reinforce what Ali said, there was £10 difference to insure my '91 1.4 340 and my '89 2.0i 360
740...340
Ok my mums 240 is the 2.3 injected its 100kw so your saying that when you change it you would need to swap oil pumps and so on but what do you swap them with?foggyjames wrote:If you're serious about putting the 2.3NA engine in, start with a 360. There's little point in buying a 340 with a view to swapping but getting cheaper insurance, because once you declare the swap, they'll be as pricy as each other.
If you don't declare the modifications, you've as good as got no insurance the moment a claim worth making (i.e. above your excess) comes in and they start looking a little closer at the car. Trust me, been there, had my car inspected. I had it all declared so it was ok. My housemate was less lucky with his Micra...
The 360 makes for an easier swap, as the engine near-enough bolts in. You need to swap oil pumps, oil pans, waterpumps and pulleys. If it's a B200E or B230E from a 740 (most likely is), I'm not at all sure that the standard inlet manifold will clear the bonnet.
