yep i jus been a bit of a tit, jus worked out what it meant, so the best thing to do is to nab one from a 960 or 40 or 240, and jus change the sump and oil pump over (i assume thats what you meant)
will the inlet manifold clear the bonnet or will that need to be changed?
the bellhousing should fit if my memory serves my right will the clutch take the 'boost power' of the 2l turbo?
i probably wont go for the 2.3 because of the insurance costs

Interesting one that......... I wrote to my insurance, said I wanted to put in a B200ft from a 940, they said that'd push it up to group 13, now that ties in with what I was told about taking a mid point between the car and the donor car... (well it'd be 12.5 but round up to 13) now if you get a B230ET out of a 740 then it's group 14, mid point 11.5 so round up to 12, may find its actually cheaper to insure :?:

The E stands for Injection
The F stands for Injection with lambda control
The T stands for Turbo

Good luck finding a 240 Turbo in this country....they were never sold in RHD (apart from a few dealer retrofits in the early 80s). 960s barely came with turbo lumps (wierdly there have been two in the last week or so on eBay, but they're rare as hell generally). You're looking at 740s and 940s, mainly. 760s also got them, but they'll probably have a B230ET.

I'd expect there to be bog-all difference between the 2.0 and 2.3...they're probably far more worried about the word Turbo!

You need to swap sump, oil pump, waterpump + pulley....that's about it. Inlet manifold is the same as on an injection 360, so no worries there. You'll probably also need a heftier fuel pump. Of course a switch to EFI will also mean you'll have to 'EFI your fuel system'. I'm fitting the gear off an injection 360, but you can almost certainly just adapt the carb setup with better lines and a high pressure pump.

I'd give some serious thought to a 2.3 NA swap. It's still a nice upgrade, much better on insurance, and far easier to wire if you stick with a carb model. I even have a 2.3 carb lump for sale, if you're interested.

cheers

I dunno....£75? Just shy of 100k on it, so still a baby. It seems like the perfect lump for swapping into a carbed 360 (what I started with), as it looks similar, has the same requirements in terms of fuel delivery, etc.

I'm intruiged regarding the piston slap. The older ropier ones start to sound a bit vocal (my 240 at 205k and my housemate's 740 Turbo at just shy of 200k are like this), but you've usually got about another 100k before it becomes an issue from anything other than a noise point of view.

Most 740 GLEs were on K-Jet mechanical injection, so although all the ancillaries are the same, the fuel system wouldn't help you in this instance....so you needn't feel too bad!

yea was a 2.3 n/a 9 (b230k????) on about 260k miles and on lpg for the last 100k
as lpg is drier than petrol i jus assume it wore out faster, the compression was that low, if u parked it on a hill and left it in gear and took the hand break off it would try to turn the engine!! so my dad got a company car, vauxhall meriva :( and now he's trying to scrap 'my' 760 not impressed

Is it a V6 760, a diesel or a petrol turbo? There's not a lot of demand for the V6 cars, as the engine has a largely undeserved bad reputation. If it's an early turbo petrol (and the car is being parted out), I'm vaguely on the lookout for one of those engines.

If it was injection, it'd have been a B230E. K is downdraft carb (like your 360, and this 2.3 lump I have), A is sidedraft carb (older....like my 240, and pre 85 (?) 360 carb models). At that sort of mileage, it was probably getting tired, especially if it were an early B230 - those were a little weaker than later ones. It's hard to know exactly what caused it, as it's somewhat premature for an NA on the face of it...but almost anything in its history could have spoiled the compression. Having said that, it's still a good mileage by most standards!

When you say it would try to turn the engine - I assume you don't just mean an initial 'jerk' at it takes up the slack? That is normal even on a tight engine - and on a steep enough hill a brand new car will most likely roll if left in gear, as there's not that much internal resistance in an engine. Automatics get around this by locking the output shaft to the case of the box (not exactly sure how, mind you), but you have to be a touch careful with manuals. Apologies if I'm insulting your intelligence there.

cheers

nah s'all good, it dint jus jerk it had a real good go at rolling! not on a steep hill either but thats what the hand break was for i spose!
its the v6 petrol on 170k all it needs is 1 rear tyre and the over drive bush in the g box then its sorted for a few more thousand miles, there is nothing wrong with it, the engine is sweet and smooth, and it doesnt hand about either itll give most cars a run for their money. full stainless exhaust, and the usual things in a volvo.
i jus dont want it to be scrapped i could fix it up in a week if i had the time,
well rant over with

does the b230 that u were on about earlier use the same ignition stuff? ie renix and the flywheel sensor or would i need the 230 flywheel (and clutch) ive never done major work on a volvo i jus know and love em! although i fixed my dads 240 wen i was 3

It would be best to use its own ignition system - it's pretty rare you can mix and match sucessfully. Pickup is via a trigger in the distributor. You'd need to find a similar car in a scrap yard (easy enough!) to pull some of the wiring, as I didn't bother with stripping all of that out.

The 360 waterpump is shallower, and with a different pulley.
