Intake manifold surface that is against head can be not so straight and there can be vacuum leak from there, blue hydomar or something it was that some recommended, or then straightening manifold, you need enough big piece of glass, some sand paper (800 or so) and also something to clamp glass and sand paper to table.

Then brake servo could leak into manifold too, but this should cause some other problems to car's behaviour too.

Also it can be that you don't have enough strong spark, I remember when I put megasquirt and new used ignition from 240, it did run a lot better, also smell of unburnt fuel was not so strong, so I would say that renix unit can give bit bad spark sometimes. Maybe coil gets weak or something.

Thanks for the suggestions, it gives me two things to look at. It seems the choke has no effect at all. I will need to sort it before the bad weather starts. I was hoping the new carb would sort the problem.
