Well Volvo is part of the Ford group, so they can swap bits around if they wish, and there's no point developing two different engines to do the same thing. The Volvo engine is a great engine, so they just need to make it fit, and they have a fast Focus ST.

Why they make it at a Ford plant rather than just importing from Volvo at Sweden I don't know. Cost possibly, but you have to set up all the machining... I'd worry about quality. Have there been any issues with the Ford built ones?

Yeah I look at these too every now and again. Love em, but way too expensive!!

Ask Lizzie Pope about writing them off, although she did it into an armco not a tree ;)

Right, I see. So mechanically the current generation of Ford and Volvo engines are the same?

With regard to quality, what do you mean? As a consumer, how do you judge the quality of an engine? Just curious.

I've spoken to Lizzie about it... she gets to drive too many fun cars anyway :(

I know the new 6 cylinder lump is built in south Wales, but I didn't realise the 5-pot is...are you sure that's right Rupert?

The 5-pot is still essentially the same as the old T5 unit, so very much a Volvo design. In terms of the Focus ST, etc, it's all Volvo kit, with the software 'adjusted' by Ford...or so I'm told by someone who knows these things ;) I wouldn't go getting your pants in a bunch about quality on the 5-pot just yet....and I bet the new short 6-pot is just fine too (although a slag to work on, no doubt!)

cheers

By quality I was referring to the standards of machining and assembly. I was just wondering if assembling them here led to any engines having problems due to bad assembly or anything. Just wondering, I've not heard anything to suggest it :)

i belive the 5-pot is fine, seeing as it's a tried and tested unit, but the 6 pot is having some issues - whether this is due to Ford build quality or just down to a new design I don't know.

As far as I'm aware the 'new T5' is built in Taffistan, but I'm not absolutely certain. It's not quite the old ripsnorting T5 we all know and love, it's more of a hybrid of the old T5 and the old 2.5LPT.

well according to roger who dropped my M90 off on monday - and hes worked in the plants is that volvo rebuilt the engine production line to a high std to build the engines on it - so im assuming for a while all our 5 cylinders have been built in bridgend .

I think the 'new' 2.5 is a stroker version of the 2.3, not a bored out version, like the old LPT.

it still has the larger bore but a slightly longer stroke , all the later blocks ie from S60 R onwards have the stronger block , that can be bored 84mm

So it's a bit of both? Larger bore (with thicker liners), but not as wide as the B5254, with longer stroke to make up the difference? Now I come to think of it, I did read about the new 'R' engine being bigger bore than the 2.3s, and theoretically more susceptible to HG failure and liner cracking as a result of it...but assumed the R and 2.5T blocks weren't the same.

cheers

Found a rather heated debate on the B234 beastie Here on Turbobricks which might be of interest to some who haven't already seen (and contributed to) it

Haha....loving that thread. ACB is an idiot, and gets what he deserves.

If you look at a B234 or B204 inlet manifold, it's pretty obvious why there's a problem with it. It's similar to (but worse than) the K-Jet manifold.

cheers
