B200E won`t start

Post by valdemaras » 26 Jul 2010 12:07 pm

so a few days ago i was driving home is such lovely day of 34 degrees "warm" weather :D and suddenly mine 360 GLT began to lose power, the revs dropped to zero and engine stopped and didn't start again. No idea what happened, so my friend gave me a tow home. So threw a weekend i checked some thing that i could: the fuel pump works, the gas gets threw the filter as i toked the housing from it ant there is a flow of gasoline :) , also there is spark, checked the spark plugs - OK, also there is klick klick nose coming from injectors - so those are working too.
And today i tried to start the motor after the night, it started, seemed OK for almost 3 seconds, and it stopped and won't start again. I tired to search this forum for some advises but had no luck, searched entire internet and found some same problems described in 740 forums, and there was said that the RPM (crankshaft) sensor in b200 engines makes these problems, someone written that this sensor last for about 150k km and then after that it begins not to function as is supposed to, and as an coincidence mine volvo just done 153k km
but there was no description how the hell to check that sensor if it's not working properly, only thing: that it should give 220 ohms reading, mine gives 216, but also there was said that even if it gives that reading it doesn't mean it's OK, as also in 740 theres possible to make a diagnostic it won't show that RPM sensor is working incorrectly.
So is mine research information correct and i should change that sensor, or maybe the problem is somewhere else?

Cambelt will be much more obvious, the engine will not sound right when turning over because there will be no or little compression.

If it just will not run the 2 obvious problems that come to mind are the flywheel sensor (used for precise ignition timing not RPM) and fuel pump fuse.

Firstly check the fuel pump fuse behind the battery, turn it and force the contacts onto the fuse while someone tries to start it. You say there is a flow of fuel, but it not clear what you mean, is it spurting out while you crank the engine.

I have never had a faulty flywheel sensor and I have had 360's upto 200K miles, I have had a bad connection to the Renix unit cause by a damaged seal in the plug.

To go back to basics you only need fuel and fire. Loosen off the fuel filter in the engine bay and check fuel is pumped out during cranking, also pull off a plug lead and check you are getting spark to the ground (any engine metal), obviously try not to ignite spilt fuel etc.

Basically the Engine should run if you just pour fuel down the manifold, and the ignition is working properly. The ignition needs everything clean and well serviced aswell as the flywheel sensor signal.

I done that: the fuel is pumped out while cranking, and there is spark, also checked the fuel pump fuse, checked the connections to that fuse box behind the battery, checked crankshaft sensor's connections.
Any more ideas guys?

hmm, maybe try pulling out an injector and seeing if it is actually spraying.

Did you check the spark at the end of a plug lead? Is it a good bright spark?

Try spraying good dose of easy start into the manifold, then quickly putting the hose back on, or just pouring some petrol in (a few cc).

I havn't heard of the flywheel sensor failing in such a way as you describe, giving an erratic signal, but it could be faulty.

You could try a timing light on the crank pulley to check the ignition timing.

well i think i found the problem. Seems that air flow meters butom was loosen and there was more air flowing than the meter showed to car's computer.
So put some hermetic on, put one new screw to hold beter, started the engine, it started ok and was running god, but i didn't checked what will happen when pushing the gas pedal, because i was afraid while the hermetic wasn't hardened enough it could get flown away, so i'll check that tomorrow, and will see if that was the only problem :) 340pw
