Please help me out. I have only owned my car for a week now and have discovered a really annoying and sometimes dangerous problem. For some reason the engine dies when cornering while applying any power. For example. just going round a round a bout causes problems. It may be oil related problems but not really sure. This is my first Volvo and i like it so i wnat to sort it. Also my throttle keeps sticking too but i'm not sure why. I thought it may be the clutch but when i give it more throttle than its stuck at it seams to go back to normal. My speedo cable is broken too and i dont really want to pay dealer prices also does it fit somewhere in the wheels or something as i have not come across a speedo that doesn't go to the gearbox. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Please email me as i haven't got access to 'internet' only email as of tomorrow.

The 1.7 has a really pesky carb.
It is quite problem-prone since a pretty crucial part of the carb is made out of plastic and wears out.
A 1.7 with a good carb is surprisingly fuel economical... but one with a bad carb drinks like crazy.
The speedo is connected to the front wheels, dunno which one in the UK, in Holland it is the left wheel.

For the throttle sticking, check all linkages on carb and pedal to see if they are sticking and oil if necessary, check for any carpet in footwell that may be catching on the pedal to make it stick, or it could be the throttle cable needs oiling or it may be frayed inside the outer sleeve.
With regards to the car dying especially around corners, if someone's had a look at the carb before you purchased it then it is possible the float height is set wrong so not allowing enough fuel in to the carb so when cornering the fuel is moving away from the pick-up tube in the float bowl of the carb. Check the float height.

hi i agree with morgan about the float hight in the carb
sticking throttle could be that the second choke butterfly is not returning
these have a habbit of doing this if the car is driven round slowly therefor the second choke never opening.....the spindle then siezes
work the throttle back and forth and with plenty of wd40 at each end of the spindle it should free off
good luck
