Engine mountings worn / loose

Post by ereg340 » 08 Jun 2005 08:27 pm

Had a free full service done on Monday courtesy of the garage who made a hash of replacing the clutch and knackering the prop shaft last year, Had some misgivings about letting them near the car after last time but its too late now.
They gave me a service report afterwards showing areas that needed attention and one of the things mentioned was Loose / worn engine mountings. Can anyone tell me if this is expensive hard or to cure. Its the mot in september and there's some other stuff which I'll need to do for that.
Cheers, ereg340

dont think engine mounts are part of the mot

i'd leave them till they break, then do the whole lot at once if i were you. not terrably expensive - local garage was gonna cost me £50 to do one (labour was £35 of that).

Get them done asap before your exhaust shakes to peices and your prop breaks when they snap and your engine jumps out!!!

These will need to be replaced before the MOT as they are part of the test.

Easy enough to install, £5 + vat each from GSF

Now I do have problems with these parts too, from local Volvo dealer one would cost 108 euros and I need two....

Perhaps those older model rubber versions would fit? These new hydraulic ones are sure too expensive to buy :(

My exhaust is already torn apart and also one of gearbox mounts too...

Maybe this explains all the problems i've had with the propshaft , also the garage said the exhast is a bit loose so these problems must stem from the engine mountings (?).

Will the engine need to be taken out to sort this out ?, I know i could probably answer this question by looking in the haynes manual but I can't find the damn thing at the moment . I will have to get this done at the garage so I'd like to know if the mechanic would be pulling a fast one if he says its an engine out job. Also is it worth trying to pick up engine mounts from the breakers (Duh, I don't even know what they look like  )

The engine does not have to be taken out, just lifted so the mounts can be taken off and replaced.

Not worth getting mounts from a breakers as this is a bad idea and bad practice because you don't know what you will end up with, they may last a long time or they may give up the ghost in a week so it's always best to buy new ones.

Hi guys

Having had engine mount problems and also having swapped an engine on a 340 I thought I could help here.

The 340 and 360 have different engine mounts so Ive only got info on the 1.4 340. The 1.7 I think is the same but Im not certain.

The engine has 4 mounts. The rear ones fit into L shape brackets which bolt with three alan bolts into the subframe - onto which the steering rack also bolts. The front mounts onto a separate U shape bar and the mounts here are more accessable and also are cylinderical in shape.

I had trouble with a shakey idle and engine which was actually caused by the mounting bolt for one of these front cylindrical engine mounts being missing!! No wonder the engine was shakey!

Replacing the front engine mounts is more of an "engine lift" and not and "engine out" job. When the engine is bolted in the car, loosen the nuts hold the mount to the beam on the car and ALSO the bolt holding the mount to the engine. I've nver changed the rear ones so arent sure if the engine needs to be completely removed.

The rear engine mounts are about 40 quid from volvo ( I bought some 5 years ago! ). However, I wonder if some companies in holland make replacements which are cheaper than volvos.

Id personally like to get a second opinion about the engine mounts as you dont want to have to change them if they are fine. If you know a friendly volvo dealership or another garage who knows the 340, ask them what they think. Walker Farrimond Volvo here in manchester have helped me in the past by taking a look at my motor for free and confirming if things need doing.... However, they are too expensive so I do the work myself!

good luck!

S
