im new to the site and im looking to buy a 340 as a project and cheap drifter, though it wont be a daily as i have a mk2 golf td im starting to work on. plus i love the look of the retro shape 340 haha.
i was thinking a 1.4 mainly tbh due to tax cost. difference i thought is silly for a small amount of power diffrerance. though from reading ive been doing it look slike 1.4's are not tunable? are 1.7s better? say if i was looking for 150bhp max.
obv eventually i will probably do a engine rebuild but that will be longer term. not while i get back to drifting.
cheers guys
1.4 vs 1.7
Re: 1.4 vs 1.7
do a bit of research if you want those sort of figures youlle want a bigger engine, f7 or a larger volvo engine will put close to 150bhp

Re: 1.4 vs 1.7
The 1.7 has a fair bit more torque and is a lot faster in the real world than 1.4. The 1.4 doesn't go too badly, and probably isn't a lot slower than the 1.7, if you drive it hard and I've done many road rally miles on my 1.4 without any issue. I wouldn't recommend tuning the 1.4, there's very little point and those that have had to take them apart do seem to reckon that once disturbed they're difficult to get back together properly. I had a right game trying to get the inlet/exhaust manifold re-sealed on my vario and have never got it running as well as my other 1.4.
If you want 150bhp the easiest and cheapest way to get it is with an F7R engine swap. Harder/more expensive routes would be a Renault 1.4 or 1.7 turbo or tuning one of those big heavy Volvo engines.
If you want to strip it out, stick Land Rover shocks on it and weld the diff the cheapest option (and the one that will be most popular on here) would be to buy one that has already had this done to it.
