Cleaning the flametrap

Post by kloppen » 07 Aug 2005 11:16 pm

Hi
-86 360 B200k

Today I desided to clean the ventliationhoses and flametrap. I just took the black box off the enginge and poured som white spirit into it. (solvent). And shook it for while. A lot of dryed oilbits came out. And it took a while to get it all out.

Then I cleaned the littlie pipe that goes into the intake manifold, (under the carb.) The metal-pipeconnection was completely filled whit old dry oil. It was not possible to blow through it.

Well fixed all this... and now the big hose from the flametrap that goes into the top of the carb is sucking air... (before it came "mist" out of it).

Before I cleaned this system I had my carb adjusted to more gas to air...

Should I adjust it again now when it sucks air "around" the carb (the air goes into the big ventilatien hose and down into the little one that goes into the manifold.

where is my flametrap?

Post by brad360 » 21 Aug 2005 11:44 am

http://www.volvoadventures.com/howtodoflametrap.html

has a link for B20 engines:

Does the 360GLT have a B20 engine?

Mine does not have the hose, as illustrated, coming from the oil cap at the top of the engine.

Does mine have non-original plumbing?

Where do I find this mysterious flametrap?

It sounds a good idea to clean it from what i read.

No B20, but B200.

Near starter motor there is black box bolted with 2 10mm bolt to engine block from there hose goes to intake. You take that black box out and also hoses, clean all of them, flame trap is in hose, very fragile if it is made from metal, new one is plastic and very cheap.

So the B200 injection engine also got this flametrap right? I think i'll give it a try then.

I've just found it and cleaned it. It was a little bit clogged.

Good thing after cleaning flametrap is that engine is not blowing air/gases from oil dipstick hole anymore ;)

flametrap

I thought better to let the gasses escape via the dipstick hole than blow some seal somewhere. I left my dipstick in loose, not pushing it in hard so the o-ring goes into the hole.

Will take a look for the lack box and flame trap etc.

I was wondering if some screwed up stainless steel wool might act as a flame trap. Maybe I'll lash out and spend a few $ on the real plastic one, if I don't have one already.

Letting the gasses ouy by the dipstick is not a good idea at all! The gases are toxic, and shouldn't come in the passenger compartment, what they will propably do if they come in the engine bay. Cleaning was really a piece of cake and the metal filter is a bit fragile but it wasn't damaged at all. So i could put it back in old shape.

flametrap & black box

Post by brad360 » 25 Aug 2005 07:39 am

Still searching....

Looking in my 1986 360GLT engine bay, near the starter motor I believe I have found the thingy that looks a bit like Fig 40.1 p53 in Haynes manual.

Except on top of mine is another thingy, one metal pipe runs to exhaust manifold, another metal pipe runs to inlet manifold, then towards the front there is a metal thing shaped like a flying saucer, about 60mm diameter, from this runs a rubber/plastic hose up to a plastic thing on the side of the engine head, from there another hose runs back to the inlet near where the throttle is (near where accelerator cable goes).

The rubber hose might only be 10 or 12mm diameter.

What diameter is this flametrap?

From near the throttle, another hose runs to a black plastic cylinder, about 5" (125mm) diameter, about 6" (150mm) tall. What is this thing?

Somewhere another hose runs back to the renix ECU. The engine bay is not in front of me as I type.

The metal pipes look like they may never have been undone. Do they need to be undone to get to the flametrap?

That is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system also known as EGR. The flametrap is marked in the next picture.
