Jayk's little 345

Hello all.
Well today I tried to get this 1.4 engine working.
We reconnected the breather from the cam cover to the carburetor base, there was no restrictor in the new pipe, but least it was connected now.
The engine will fire and run when on full choke however as soon as the choke is pushed off, the engine stalls.
I have check for air leaks but unable to find any, jayk is going to trial a different coil.

When car is about to stall, it is like being flooded then a large bang then stalls.

Any advice please

Ben

I blocked the breather with some rolled up cardboard, worked well enough until I got a replacement. It won't run well with out it, but I don't think it should stall.

Sounds like fuel delivery problem, does it squirt fuel in after it stalls,.. when you pump the throttle?

Yes there was fuel being squirted when the throttle is depressed.
I did kink the pipe to simulate the restriction.
It could either idle on full choke or at 3000ish revs with no choke. Both these situations the pipe was unrestricted.

I would have said it is getting too much air and a restrictor would be the first thing to fit.

I agree the restriction need to be placed, but sadly even with the pipe kinked to simulate the restriction, she would still only idle on full choke.

Have you looked at the spark plugs to see if it is running rich or lean?

Also you should check for vacuum leaks, could be split hoses or a carb problem.

She just stalls off full choke, the plugs were black after running on full choke. Could not find any leaks that I could see/hear. I thought I could hear one, couldn't find it.
Mac has said that withbthe car running normally on full choke that the mix is running lean or weak spark.
So I think the best course is get that restriction in place and test the coil?

Hi,

on full choke the carburetor works with a partially opened throttle.

If the engine stalls without choke, I would suggest to control the setting of the idle
mixture screw. If the screw is completely in, the engine gets no gas in idle position
and will stall.

I would earth a spark plug on to th block, crank the engine and check the colour of the spark.
