I agree with the interpretation.

XLB = VIN code for Volvo
345 = Model type - 3 series, 4 cylinder engine, 5 doors (hatchback)
57 = Engine type - cannot find - only 53,54,& 55 (B14.4E,14.4O,& 14.4S) begin with 5 - only 27 (B200F) ends with 7
It is probable that this code was allocated to a B14.0E fitted with a 2way catalytic converter (which fits with 1991)
3 = Gearbox MT5 (M47IIR)
M = Model year 1991
C = Manufacturing plant - Born, The Netherlands
805457 = Sequential chassis number.
