'click' test on 340 vario

Post by bt6 » 13 Sep 2005 02:41 pm

hey. i just tried to post this question as a reply to another vario question and it seems to have disappeared into the ether. so sorry if this is a repeat...
on another vario post, someone instructed to run the car in neutral with the bonnet up rev to around 1700 rpm, and listen for a clicking sound that is the valve engaging. i tried this on my 340 vario and i heard no click!

the transmission seems to work almost most of the time, although sometimes at town speeds (30-40) it revs up to 3500-4000 and won't go back down after i ease of the accelerator. this happens at motorway speeds sometimes as well, if i have to brake suddenly. the revs shoot up and stay there, and the only solution is to pull over and turn the engine off and start from zero.
most of the time it is fine, however, 2800-3000 on low speeds and around 3500-4000 on motorway speeds. my regular mechanic (who doesn't do CVTS) said if it works well most of the time, it's probably not worth messing with. however, i'm about to take a long 500+ mile trip to wales next week, and i'm concerned that maybe i should get this checked out.
also, the low-gear hold switch does not seem to work at all. this isn't a problem for me, as i don't really foresee a situation where i'll need it, but i'm wondeirng if this could be the reason why the valve doesn't click as it should.
any advice would be appreciated!
thanks,
b
