I've just sorted out my ignition system in the hope of curing my rough idling and various other problems with the engine holding revs too high or stalling.
Eventually had to get the AA man out (partly due to my incompetence) and with all the ignition set up correctly it still doesn't run properly. I'd already done all the loose carb bolts so everything's nice and tight. It seems like someone's been trying to cure a rough running problem for a while, as the adjustments were all over the place. It's not possible to get the engine to run smoothly and at the right revs.
So I probably need to get the carb rebuilt. Given my success so far I'm not sure I fancy tackling it myself. Where should I go to get the carb running properly - or should I just try to find a decent one to replace it with? The Haynes mentions various changes to the Weber carb over the years, so I presume I'll need a specific type for my car - 1983 Mk.II with B14.2E.

If you do get excited and do it yourself, there is a Haynes for Weber carbs, as well as one for solex's, they both crop up from time to time, and I'm lead to believe the 300 ones are in it. I don't have the either though I'm afraid, so can't definately confirm!
I'll have a look if there is anything in the russek books, or my super early green books might cover yours, I know they don't cover mine specifically...
As for taking it somewhere, I dread to think what the cost may be, or if they'd use the proper parts with the lack of availibility there seems to be. I got lucky when I did the weber on my 1.7, somehow it wasn't working, I just took all the bits apart over a newspaper, cleaned them, and made sure there weren't any bits left on the newspaper when I put it back together. Runs sweet now, I think the carb pixies were in my favour that day.
