Which drivebelt for my 1.7 DL?

I have a 1991 340 DL, with B172K engine, and 106,000 miles.
I want to replace the camshaft drivebelt, but cannot find the correct replacement part! :?
The Volvo dealers, etc, here in Birmingham, UK, say a 125 tooth belt is correct, but they are too short! The one on the car has 133 teeth, or thereabouts! :o
Can anyone tell me what is going on here? I really need to replace this drivebelt, as I don't know when it was last done.
Thanks, to anyone who can help me.
Jim

Hi there,

Where abouts in Birmingham are you? Johnsonns Volvo in Hampton in Arden are pretty helpful, although they order their parts from Daventry - quickly I must add!

Hi Steve, ta for quick response.
I tried Johnsons, on a Saturday as that's the only day I'm not at work, but their spares guy "hasn't come in today".
I live in Solihull Lodge, so Henley is quite close.
I also tried the Volve spares guy in Stoney Lane, but he came up with the same 125 teeth!
My local car parts shop can supply the 125 tooth belt, but it won't fit! That's the problem I'm struggling with. Why does my car need 133 teeth?

Does your car have power steering by any chance?

Hi Adam,

No, no power steering, or any other "bells and whistles"! It's a 340DL, 1991, 5 doors, manual, with B172K engine.

I know but a conversion is quite easy on a 1.7 and so i wondered if someone had done it!! Erm try drivebelts from 440/460/480 its basically the same engine!! And gud motor spares should be able to get you one to fit just by pattern width and no of teeth.
Also quite strange i thought the DL was only available with a 1.4???? sm14

Hi Adam,
No, no power steering mod/conversion. I'm darned sure of that, the steering is definitely manual! My biceps can testify to that!
Interesting idea, 440/460 engine parts. I'll look into that avenue of exploration....
However, I've just been to Ultra-Parts web-site, and they still quote 125 teeth, also for the 440 engine:
Part No : UTB9670
Description : Timing Belt
Manufacturer : Ultra-Parts Ltd
Unit Of Sale : Each
No of Teeth/Belt Width: 125T x 19mm
Profile: Round
Print ID: 94120, 125 SP 190H
OE No: 771-171 8752, 334-3720-3
In fact, this is the identical belt that they list for the 340 lump! :x
So, I'm still stuck at this 133 tooth stage! :x

Adam, just a though, following your comment about DLs being 1.4....
Could it be that mine is not "standard"? How could I check? :?:

What does it say in your cars log book? As a thought have a look at the rear hatch, as it may be that that has been rerplced! Does the car have tinted windows? If yes then its a GL.

There is a fair bit of swing on the alternator so it could be its on its top adjustment? Or even be missing its tensioning screw? I have known these been put on upside down and in which case you will need the longer belt or even alter it back the way it should be!!

Adam,
No, the log book says DL.
My alternator is driven by a separate belt altogether! This runs from the crankshaft pulley to the alternator, via an idler, but is fitted after the camshaft drivebelt, which runs from a much smaller crankshaft pulley.

Pure '340' badged cars also had tinted windows ;)

Adam I believe JimW is talking about replacing his cambelt, not the alternator/PAS belt.

They most certainly did 1.7DL's... I think we're confusing the matter somewhat, the man just needs to find a cambelt with 133 teeth

By the way, as I'm new to Volvo ownership, what do "Snowcap", "Redline" and "Blueline" refer to?

by SteveP
Theres usually some on ebay, but right when someone needs one there isnt - typical!

Snowcap - optional accessory cover/scoop that goes over the grille in the bonnet

Redline - a special edition 340 with red decalls

Blueline - a special edition 340 with blue decals and other extras
