Engine swap

Post by Day » 23 Mar 2006 06:12 pm

volvo 940 turbo 2.0 engine...

.. into Volvo 360 GLE 2.0.

Will it go? And will it go easy? Id like to do it myself if possible.

I hear the 360 has a tourque shaft instead of a prop, so would i be able to drop the 940 prop in without chopping it too much? Or would it be ok with the original?

If not, is there anything else youd recommend?

My intentions are drifting, and itll most likely be a trailer only car.

Ill be doing all the nesecary suspension work aswell. And obviously tearing all but 1 seat out, but would it be worth sourcing some FRP or fibregalss panels for the bonnet, front wing etc etc.

Any other tips for drifting a 300?

Thanks! Dave.

Not another  lol, yeah the 940 2L turbo engine goes straight in with some minor adjustments to one engine mount, custom downpipe and use the ecu from the 940, torque tube on the car will do just fine so should only be a case of swapping the engine
cheers

Ah cheers.

Am i right in saying the 340 has the renault engines, and the 360 the volvo engines?

I was planning a full custom exhaust anyway. and hopefully a new ecu. But how much work would the engine mount involve?

Im planning to do as big an overhaul as possible to the donor engine, but does anyone have any experience with chaninging some little bits, like the air filter, spark plugs and HT leads? And is there any other little bits worth chinging, or does this particular engine not respond very well to little mods?

You need oilpan and oil pump from 360, maybe engine mounts for block this I'm not sure, then the usual stuff. I think that first time it may take a weekend, after all things learned maybe half day if there is some guys helping with bits and lifting etc.

There is not as much space for turbo as there is in 940 so there may or may not be little adjustment needed, maybe putting turbo to higher, exhaust manifold upside down? I don't know, but those are rumours I have heard.

Often there is several little things that takes time and of course you find those 1 hour after parts shop is closed :D

What engine management you were about to use? From 940 maybe? Lot of wire loom guessing and measuring then needed.

older 340s are with Volvo or Renault engines, I think after 1986 all 340s are with renault engines, 360s are always with Volvo engines.

Yep correct, Renault engines go in the 340 and prop is weaker, Volvo engines in the 360 and torque tube setup should take the power, there is one about with 300bhp and doing gentle starts.

Unfortunately i'm not sure what needs doing to the engine mount but I can probably put you in touch with someone that does (bloke just sold a 2L turbo converted 360 on driftworks), you need to also use the original 360 sump and oil pickup. TBH your probably best to get the engine in there first and then modify it after, I believe there are chips available or you could go standalone ecu. I think fitting the engine into the car will create mods itself with the custom exhaust system and probably have to use an aftermarket air filter. You could change to a larger turbo also afterwards but I think the small mitsi turbo that comes with the 2L turbo only just fits anyway (unless you take a hammer to the inner wing). With a few mods I'd think you'll hit 170bhp(ish) anyway,

edit: something else to note, the guy that put the 2L turbo in his was a glt to start with, im not sure but I think this would make the swap a lot easier due to the fuel pump/fuel lines

cheers

You'll be lucky - the only lightweight stuff I've ever seen made is for the Mk1 style 343 rally cars. Only way to go would be to mould them yourself or get them made by a FG specialist.

The other questions are covered in lots of depth elsewhere in the forum, have a browse of Dai's performance catalogue and try the search function for things like suspension and drifting modifications.

Yeah, thanks alot guys! Really helped so far.

I was planning to get as much done myself, and take it away to a specialist of some sort, and have them custom the exhaust, and if possible a stand alone unit.

Id change the air filter anyway, if mores going out, you need more to go in in the first place.

Ive had a good look around the site before, but ill have another look now, as im more serious about the project now as i was before.
