740...340
740...340
my brother in-law has decided to get rid off his volvo 740(i believe thats what it is) i'm after a cheap 340, as my first car, but was wondering if it is possibly to put a big 2.4l engine in the small/medium car that is the 340, and was also wondering if it had been done before, any help would be greatly appreciated, but this is only a possibilty, and niether of the cars have been bought by me...yet!

As long it's a redblock it will fit. Although you might wanna look for a 360 instead of a 340. They already have a 2.0 litre engine, and the 2.3 will bolt straight onto the torque tube.
Leather, leccy windows and mirrors, snowcap, foglights, open air filter, black roof upholstery. What more do you want? >a 2.3 turbo!
it is na,turbo would be nice but starts getting expensive then!!! i'm new to volvo stuff please elaberate on 'redblock' the reason i want a 340 is beacuse they do a 1.4, and it's cheaper insurance, is there a 3dr 360, or did they never make one? also could anyone elaberate on weight figures on both 3dr 340's and 3dr 360's(if they did one) and also power figures of the 1.4,1.7, 2.0, 2.3

Redblock is called such, because the block itself is painted red. Look beneath the valve cover and you will see the engine is red. The 2.0 makes 115hp, the 2,3 anywhere from 120 up to 132, there where different types of 2.3's. I don't know about the 1.4 and 1.7 though.

1.4 is around 74bhp, 1.7 is around 90ish I think. 1.4 is something like 960kg and I know the 2L glt weights 1150kg. 3 door 360s do exist because i've got one but they're pretty rare and i'm not sure about the weight of them as the 1150kg is for the 5door. Basically if your after a 3 door you might be best going for the 340 as you'll struggle to find a 360. There really isn't much difference with insurance though, mine went up £44 for swapping from a 1.4 to a 2L glt.

The only 3dr 360 ive seen is our GLS but thats too far gone to save now
. There is only 2 insurance groups between the 340 1.4 (G7) and the 360 (i think) but i'm not sure what there like with modding.
My 5dr 340 has been quoted at £911.60 with Liverpool Victoria and Adams modded 340 "GLT" cost him just over a grand for his 1st year with them but i'd check first.
P.s whats wrong with a 5dr??

If you're serious about putting the 2.3NA engine in, start with a 360. There's little point in buying a 340 with a view to swapping but getting cheaper insurance, because once you declare the swap, they'll be as pricy as each other.
If you don't declare the modifications, you've as good as got no insurance the moment a claim worth making (i.e. above your excess) comes in and they start looking a little closer at the car. Trust me, been there, had my car inspected. I had it all declared so it was ok. My housemate was less lucky with his Micra...
The 360 makes for an easier swap, as the engine near-enough bolts in. You need to swap oil pumps, oil pans, waterpumps and pulleys. If it's a B200E or B230E from a 740 (most likely is), I'm not at all sure that the standard inlet manifold will clear the bonnet.

I think it's Group 8 for 360 carb and Group 9 for 360 injection. My 240 is Group 13, but still dirt cheap to insure!

Nope... taken from Parkers... (some overlap as they seem to class the 340 and 360 as the same)V6 Man wrote:I thought it was one group lower for all James.
