Downpipe Removal - 360 B200E - Very urgent

Post by 990 » 08 Aug 2006 07:55 pm

HELP:

I need advice on removing the downpipe from the manifold on the B200E to replace the knackered gasket

I can get the front two bolts from underneath no problem, but the rear bolt is totally stuck.
I have tried WD40/heat and brute force but to no avail (I do not want to break the manifold stud)

Ok people - advice, a tool for the job - ANYTHING - before I am gassed while driving to work.

So far the replacement of the downpipe has been a four month saga - I now have a long list of companies I will NEVER use for car repairs again

Erm, dunno tbh, just find any combination of socket that you can get on there to turn it, I think I used a long extension with a universal joint and also one of those weird Halfords socket extensions where if you put it on halfway you can kinda get a slight angle on it.

Other than that, plenty of heat and WD-40. Heat first, then WD-40 remember, works best for me.

Think Andy is trying to say wobble bar!

Erm, aside from the 2 ft breaker bar, I don't know what to say. Black socket and an impact wrench maybe?

I got that by using one of these:

Then two extension pieces and when exhaust was hot I did spray rusted bolt remover thing (Same as WD40 + freezes).

With these I had plenty of pace to turn, however there was only one angle (from several possible) where all applied power actually did go to bolt.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I did that under car, might be bit easier when car is in air and you can walk under it

It's easier from under the car? - I can do the others underneath (I have a ramp) but I could not reach it from there

I did all from underneath the car, but there was two extensions needed for that and there really is one hole between exhaust and rear side of lower suspension arm where from you can reach it and still have enough small angle to actually use some torque to opening bolt.

I think that I did put that thing on pic that I posted to between two extension pieces.

Bit hard to describe as don't know all words for these tools :P

This sounds familiar.. I had to torch the exhaust manifold till it was glowing red to get that bolt loose.

Same thing with me...I tightened all the nuts down a month earlier, when they where actually a bit loose. Then when I was placing a new exhaust nothing would budge anymore. So like I already said...get it off the car... put the manifold in a bench press, torch the area surrounding the bolt until it starts glowing a little..spray some wd40 if you like (havent seen this being done before on a redhot piece of metal though).
Then grab yourself a good ringwrench and maybe a piece of pipe for added torque and try getting it off.

Red hot metal + WD40 = fire, smoke, fumes (lots of them), thunderstorms, stillborn lambs, hamsters and geese living together - etc.etc.

Quite fun really,

Mac.
