On my 360 GLE (B200K engine) I sometimes get a shrieking sound from under the cam cover just after start-up. Its not like waterpump noise and the belts for the fan and power steering are not slipping. The sound is mainly after the car has been left for a while in the cold - if I start it regularly it stays away. The noise increases with engine speed and then suddenly dissappears. It doesn't happen everytime I start the car and its not terribly loud but any clues on what it could be would be much appreciated. Is it likely to be bearing for the camshaft or something less serious and how long can I leave it before doing anything? The car has a new cam belt but I did not change the tensioners or anything else when I did that job.
Cheers, bogbasic.

Timing belt tensioner most likely, mine keeps quite lot of noise at certain revs, but I have heard that it is nothing serious and several others seem to have such noise.
My car got new tensioner + belt + water pump and after that it has kept those noises, must been at least 2 years now, maybe 3, can't remember too well.
Maybe it is possible to get rid of noise to taking tensioner out and putting back, who knows.

Hi, When you say the noise is from under the cam cover - do you mean the cam cover - or the cam belt cover ??.
If cam cover, problem could be a cam bearing or the cam front oil seal.
If belt cover, then tensioner is possible, or jack shaft oil seal.
Other possibility is the center contact in the distributor cap - this little carbon bush can squeak, squeal, whistle or moan for up to 5mins after a cold start.
(the noise seems to be associated with high frequency vibration induced by dust buildup). B14s are especialy prone but I have heard it on most versions.
Some cars will never suffer, but on some it is almost impossible to be rid.
The main thing to be worried about is a cam (usually the front) bearing starting to pick up and go tight - new head job if the case, (cam bearings are line bored directly into the head and caps - there are no shells!!). I have known cases of a cam seizing and breaking, allowing the cam pully to fly off and destroy the belt cover and jackshaft. (sorry for the horror story but you need to investigate exactly where the noise is coming from).
Mac.
