clutch plates..

Post by 5lab » 14 Nov 2006 12:34 am

right, desert driving really shags clutches, so i'm trying to formulate a get-out plan for my 360 glt..

option 1 : hope for the best
option 2 : buy a clutch kit - £30 inc postage
option 3 : work out which bits are going to actually wear, beg for a spare off someone breaking a 360..
option 4 : work out what other clutchplates might fit..

can anyone help out with option 3/4? if the clutch does go, i'll only need another 10,000 equivilent miles from it, so a bodge is just fine..

cheers

I would go for option 1 myself. tbh. The clutch on a 360 is not for the faint hearted because of the torque tube....you either have to move the gearbox and torque tube backwards or you have to take them out, or else remove the engine.

I've heard a few people who are in the know regarding expedition vehicles all say the same thing: fit your spares before you go, and take the old part with you if it's still servicable just in case

Tbh dude, I'm with Aaron on this, cough up some beers and get a few of us down, a new one really is a lot easier than trying to sort it out there. On the rally I'd imagine you are pushing time anyway, it will be a pig to do. I still need to chat with you on what me and Nick found, might come in useful.

I'm not exactly what to suggest for the best...but...changing a clutch on a 360 is about as much fun as...er....something not fun. If you think it needs doing, +1 for doing it before you leave.

cheers

i don't think it needs doing. i've absolutely no reason to think that - it could have been done 10,000 miles ago for all i know.. but.. every year about 10% of cars are left in the desert with clutch failure.. you have to run it like a b***h when you're stuck in a sanddune, and it's pretty much the only part that cant be bodged very well..

incidentally, can anyone tell me where peak torque starts on a b200e? no point revving past that when running on the clutch afterall..

Yeah, sand driving is a biatch, we had big problems in the Rover, mainly cos we were on 155 or 145 tyres :( The amount I must have kiled our clutch in one day is the reason I reckon you should start with a fresh one mate
