340 1.7 carburetor

Hi Guys,
Just joined as a new member, hoping to get my 340 back on the road!
I have experienced exactly the same problems as seagull2200 with my F reg 340 1.7 gle, where at a certain range of revs the engine splutters and sometimes dies making the car almost completely undrivable. It is currently off the road because of the problem.
My local mechanic diagnosed the problem as the second choke on the carburetor being broken so that at low revs too much fuel is being let into the engine flooding it. I have been advised not to replace the carb off the same model, because it is too dear new (I am a poor student!), and a second hand part is likely to have a similar problem.
I was thinking about trying to fit a different carb to the engine, possibly a higher performance carb such as a weber from a similar sized engine. I have heard that it is possible to fit carbs off other engines if you can make an adapter plate with a different stud pattern to make them fit, and then have the carb jetted. Does anyone know if this would work, or have any experience in doing anything similar? Or does anyone know of another carb that would fit straight on and do the job?

I'd get a decent scrap 'correct' carb for your car - i wouldn't mess with an different carb unless you want it for the performance gain.

Do you know how difficult it is to find a decent original carb, and how much would be a reasonable price to pay?
Do you also know if there is any reason why fitting a similar carb with a DIY adapter plate would cause problems?

i'd say you're looking at £30 for an origional carb - not hard to find - just phone up a breakers

Maybe a bit less...I can probably source one, but it won't be reconditioned or anything.

The major problem you'll have with a 'different but similar' is that it'll need jetting to suit your engine - which will cost at least £50 - probably above £100. It's a good thing to do...but not just to get your car running right!

does anyone know of a good carburettor which i could use if i attempted a conversion, and what kind of power increase i could expect to get? i was thinking maybe a vw golf 1.8 weber carb if i can get it jetted for a reasonable price?

Sounds like a good plan! The Rolls Royce is obviously a pair of DCOEs, but the carbs will cost £150, and the manifold way more...

Slightly out of my price range, but would do nicely! Think I'll keep it simple with a single carb for now! But thanks for the suggestion :-) !
