engine stops during ride

Post by l.kuta » 28 Feb 2007 07:32 pm

Hi,
I`ve got the problem with my 1.6D engine in 340. During a ride, the engine suddenly stops. So I have to restart by keys or I clutch down and up and the engine starts. It have happened to me three times during last moth.
Did somebody knows what is the reason of this engine stop and how to repair it?
thanks you very much

I'm afraid that the diesels weren't available in the UK at all, so none of us have much experience with them. :?

Having said that, there's usually a stop solenoid around the fuel pump area that closes off the fuel supply to turn off the engine. It needs a constant 12V to stay open, possibly a dodgy connection?

Dont know about the diesels, but the 360 has a dodgy fusebox on the left front fender (behind the battery), the fuses are very unreliable, one of them goes to the fuelpump.
I replaced mine with some regular flat fuses and have never had the problem since.

Soot boxes dont have a electronic fuel pump - they are mechanical

well the renault 5 1.6 td has the same engine and it not happend to ours

do you use sunflower oil? :P

next thing is the shut off thingy this has a wire that rusts away and/or has a loose conection

next is : the time it takes for the magic light to go out when you turn the "ignition" on this should be 10secs maybe less if it is longer you need new glowplugs or there is a problem with the glow plug conrol unit.

hope this helps

I'd check the stop solenoid as others have said, thats probably most likely. But also worth checking the fuel filter (might be a bit clogged) and also checks there's no leaks allowing air into the fuel lines.

Worst case scenario would be the diesel pump I guess, which is pretty difficult to repair unless you know exactly what you are doing. Unlikely though.

diesel pump is quite new. so I will check the oil filter. But I don`t now much about car repairing, especialy diesel. can you please tell me, where I can find the oil filter and the solenoid? and how to check the solenoid?
thanks!

erm glow plugs only aid when starting up. after that the engine runs on compression alone.

not true on 1.6 out 0f 5 clio and 340

we had glow plug control unit fail and it made it stop at bad times replaced it and glow plugs and its fine.

its not like an old tracter engine, this will stop if theres a problem there ,
yeah it may continue to run on for a while but it will stop on hard acceleration

Not the oil filter, the fuel filter (although I guess that technically is an oil filter too). Follow the fuel lines from the diesel pump back toward the tank and somewhere you'll find the filter - probably bolted to the inner wing or bulkhead. Normally they screw into some sort of housing.

The stop solenoid will be in the diesel pump. When the electrical supply is cut the solenoid will shut and fuel to the engine will be cut off - that's the only way to stop a diesel as once running it doesn't require any external power. if there's a dodgy connection somewhere it could be cutting the supply whilst you're on the move, so check the wire, and clean the connections.
