Fixing my 1.7

I thought I would share what i have found whilst trying to get my 1.7 back on the road.

Carb - took this off yesterday afternoon and the base is totally knackered, you don't even need to put it on a piece of glass you can see how badly warped it is. Someone has tried to use sealant around the base as a bodge - what a great idea!.

Temperature sender switch - has been leaking and calcified up - probably why it reads hot all the time, new one needed

Propshaft - knackered needs new one

Diff - leaking, again someone has tried to fix leak by smearing sealant on it also has been jacked up on it so cover is bent. Gasket needed

Gearbox - leaking, new gasket needed.

After taking the carb off it is obvious why it ran so badly and had such poor mpg. My next job is to save to pay for it all!!!!

LOL, that sounds about right, some monkey has had a right go at that first in the bodgetastic sense. In other words, it works for long enough to satisfy them, or until they'd sold the car.

At least you've now found most of these, hmmm, not repairs....... bodges you're halfway to getting it sorted. There's nothing worse than someone doing half a job and doing it badly, sometimes them not doing it at all is better!

Good luck and keep us posted.

Pete

Mac sells the diff gasket kits, and they're damn fine value. I also know where there are ~10 props in a pile at a scrap yard.....dry stored. It's a place fairly near MJ actually.

cheers

send him a pm
go to search , enter his name in the author box then enter
that will take you to one of his old posts ,

that will give you the pm link , send him a pm , (that gos to his v3m inbox and sends an email to his home account )

iirc he is number 527 on the membership list and there is a pm link there as well.

last time I spoke to him he was spending most of his time at his father in law Alfs house in Essex sorting out his estate, hence his absence here,

he dos pop home now and again to check his post and emails

i know of a 340 prop you have have for silly money. £5?. i'm in suffolk along the a140 and am about for the next week. if you want it i'll remove it from the car. you may even be able to pick up the gasket from mac as he's only a few more miles down the road, saves on postage i suppose.

get back to me if your interested.
