Stuntman needs B21a help!

Post by Stuntman » 26 Apr 2007 01:29 pm

hello one and all, it's been a very long time, but the new project is getting there!

I need some advice on B21a tuning, I have a pair of R-sport inlet manifolds, and I'm getting a pair of 40mm solex's from Dai, I need to know if this is a good set up, I'll be using a jetex exhaust to start with and eventually getting a new manifold made up with a full stainless system from head to twin tail pipes.

Can I add a turbo easily to this? I belive volvo offered the r-sport turbo kit for this engine, the turbo can wait but I really need the twin carb advice.

Also whats the best way to deliver the fuel requirements for the engine?

Come on chaps help!

If you plan to put turbo to it, then make sure that carbs can work under pressure, not all can and also how to tune them for boost is big mystery to me at least.

I would not even dream of carb turbo, if turbo is going in then also programmable injection should go too, it would work much better.

But if you insists putting carb + turbo, then get complete set of carb and turbo so that carb will work well with that combo.

Putting just twin carbs in and tune them to work perfectly is very easy compared to turbo + carb(s), imo. So think twice what you will do.

I hate carbed turbo's you can never set em up properly and they always seem to go bang easily

Mick supercharger is exactly what I said on the VOC forum.

Blow through set ups are very hard to set up well tbh but a suck through is fine and unfortunatly due to the heat its not possible to such through a turbo due to the heat.

Andy personaly I would recomend keeping it simple and stick to na. RHD 240's dont turbo very easily either

I know, that's why I want to do it properly, I've sourced some steering columns to lower the steering rack joint to clear the exhaust, I'm looking at re-locating the brake luid resevoiur and using stainless steel braided hose instead of the copper pipe.

The n/a option is the way of choice for the minute,

Dai just to make sure, can I get the carbs re-jetted to suit the B21a?

Be careful moving steering racks will be very easy to fuck it up and end up with loads of bumpsteer.

40s should be ok as long as you're not wanting crazy amounts of power. 45s would be better, if you're taking the engine a little further.

If you're playing with boost, I'd go EFI. It makes life so much easier. Personally, I think a nice high compression NA screamer is the way forward for pimpness :) Remember....boost and compression both raise combustion pressure - IIRC, going from 9.2:1 to 12:1 is like adding 4psi of boost in terms of combustion pressure.

My carbs were a very long way lean when I fitted them, even though they had been used on a B19. Wierd. Of course they can be adjusted, and if you want any help on playing with the Solexs, let me know!

cheers

Thanks James, I will if you don't mind, however the project will be progressing a little slower after Donna's accident, but I will try to keep it moving!
