No drive and in despro for help

Post by bwizz » 07 Sep 2007 03:12 pm

I was doing about 20 when I went for a gear change (2nd to 3rd) there was a bang, a grinding noise then no drive. It will go into gear but when you try and pull away all you get is a grinding noise and no movement there was no warning of any problems. Has anyone got any ideas, it didn't sound good. I do hope it isn't bad as I need the car. my family are having a rough patch,
my mum has had a big op on her spine, my grandmother is really poorly and I need to go to and from hospitals . I really need some help/light on this guys and girls.

thanks

The prop splines have gone i'm afraid, you need a new prop. The same happened to me, almost in exactly the same way as you have described.

Either that or differential.

Was this 360 or one with proper prop?

If 360, there is two rubber plugs in tube that contains prop, if you take those off you can see joint piece that connects prop to transmission, when that gets loose it can do such thing, it is annoying to repair as you need new joint piece and you need to remove gearbox from that propshaft tube which means that in practise you need to take out rear axle and all that.

In 340 it is much easier task and there you just need new prop shaft. In 340 engine mounts usually are worn and that causes stress to rubber part of prop, it kind of melts. But new prop and you are off, not too hard job, with 360 it is much annoying.

There should be 3 slits on each end or the prop where is clamps on. Best thing to do is slacken the clapms off at both ands and check the splines are ok. If they are you should be able to refit the prop.

It always uesed to happen to me while taking it easy rather than while giving it a hammering :?
