Warning light blinking at throttle

Post by Pappa » 10 Jan 2008 08:10 pm

Hi. Whenever i give more than 1/2 throttle on my 87 340 1.4 the warning light (diode) in the temp gauge starts blinking although the engine's not overheating.

Can this be the thingie between the air intake and the air filter? I think it's a thermostat or something? Maybe it's broken and starts giving false values when the engine's sucking lots of air? (Just a random thought). If this is broken, how does it affect engine behavior?

Almost certainly the engine temp sensor wire is shorting to the engine (probably the rocker cover). The sensor is on the water pump....and it's the only wire in the area ;)

The engine has probably rubbed through the insulation on the wire leading to the sensor.

Aha. 2 minutes and some electrical tape then, and a couple zip ties to keep it in place.

thanks

Exactly :) You may find there's no way to restrain it....it took 20 years to rub through, so tape should buy you a lot of time.

That was the issue with my 1.4, anyway. Yours may be different...

cheers

It did fix it :D I insulated it with some tape and cleaned the contacts with contact cleaner and a scalpel. Good as new! No more blinking.

Thanks!
