Gear Selectors, How Hard?

Post by garth » 02 Apr 2008 09:49 pm

Hi all,

Hoping to buy my first 340 soon, but it has a problem.

The gear selectors are knackered. How hard are they to change and cost, or should I just get another gear box?

Any help = pleasure.

Do you know what is exactly wrong with it? Do you mean the gear stick/selector itself is dodgy or something in the gearbox itself? I know there are some welds on the gear stick selector rod itself that fail, creating a limp and sloppy gear change that will eventually fail. That requires the box dropping down to get at all the parts to swap it. I've only ever done that on a 360 though, so there may be more space on a 340, and as the prop can be removed without dropping the box like on a 360 it should be a lot easier. If it within the box, then swapping it is a simple and quick fix method. If however you have the skills and interest to rebuild the box, then good for you! Mac is one of the knowledgeable people in this area. Any ideas on who diagnosed the problem and from what symptoms?

He's what the gentle man told me.......................

Only bad bit is I was driving down the motorway and it poped out of gear and would not go back in. The aa guy told me it was the gear selector on the torque tube.

The car will not select gears at all. As I have not trailer this is a major problem.

That'll be a 360 then. That's a problem much simpler than an internal gearbox malarkey. I seem to remember there was a thread about it ages ago, something to do with the mounting of the lever itself breaking? sm14

Check out my forum-searching abilities: click this

That's a decent description of what I think your problem is. Might even be able to rustle up some pictures from the tech section, or from my 360 if I get bored between coats of paint on my fuel tank tomorrow.

That's a far better link. Pwned by Ronnie's search-fu.

The soggy selector problem doesn't stop you getting gears...and generally 2 & 4 are fine...it's R, 1, 3 & 5 that are a pig. I suspect something more sinister is going on here.

When my selector cut loose, it was 2 & 4 I had problems with!

But point taken regardless
