noise, possibly exhaust related

Post by Vart » 10 May 2008 04:35 pm

afternoon,

for the last few months my 340 has had a 'noise'. this noise is sort of like a blown exhaust and the backbox is shot but this doesn't seem to be it. firstly the backbox has been blown for what seems like years and secondly the sound is coming from th wrong place.

sound comes from somewhere in the vicinity of the centre of the bulkhead and/or either front wheel tho mostly the bulk head. theres no vibration in the steering wheel, the (driving) wheels have no play up/down/sideways and turn without any bad noise.

the demon sound further avoids haynes diagnosis as its not rev dependant. comes along around 30, 45ish and after just before 60 then continues afterwards. it doesn't affect handling or performance(..........) and is mostly an irritation and concern.

any ideas?

cheers for any info.

oh, the whole exhaust is secure, no hangers missing or anything like that.

regards, toby

Hey Toby, maybe your centre box is shot too... Or maybe your down pipe.

Once one part of your exhaust starts going the rest is sure to follow, especially if the previous owner had some quick fit crap fitted. My guess is that if you fit an entire new system your problem will go away.

A good way to test for leaks is to place your hand over the end of your exhaust, do this from cold so as not to burn your hand. If your hear lots of hissing and the engine revs stay pretty constant you've defo got big leak(s) somewhere. If you feel the pressure build quick and the revs drop, then it's probably patent. However, shot mufflers in the boxes can make a hellish rattling if left too long even without leaks.

i suspect the exhaust is involved at some point, its the road speed sensitivity rather than engine speed that gets me. its due an mot in june and the backbox is a known miscreant so i'll see about a whole fix.

any particular brands worth it? not sure what it had when i bought it but it was shiny and claimed new. that was 20k miles and nearly 4 ears ago. is this acceptable?

cheers

Original Volvo exhaust is the best coping with rust. My newer 360 has a Mufflex exhaust at moment and its been under there couple of years and that rearbox looks like its been under there atleast five years. And the former owner told me when he bought it back in 2000? it had Volvo exhaust and it was in still in good condition when he replaced it with that Mufflex thing. And it has spend last 7 years in southern Finland where in winter is always wet. And to be honest it shows.

turned out to be wheel bearings after all. driver side not bad but going, passenger side all pitted and foul with an exciting stain plus rust on the stub axle.

possibly related to that part of the car belching blue smoke a year ago but that was put down to brakes seizing up.

many thanks to mac with tools and know-how who put it right. i believe he now has all the part numbers for front wheel bearings plus oil seals so ask that way if you need said parts.

further work included the replacing of my old bosal 'zorst as the backbox was held together by what seems to be magic and the rest wasn't that far behind. the volvo system from the soon to be crushed '84 on macs drive does somewhat make the drive more comfortable on the ears.

the brake hose that got an advisory last MOT was also replaced but was nearly thrown onto the fire as it didn't want to play nicely.

all in all a good day and many thanks to mac for tools, know how and patience once again.

just hope it passes its MOT on thursday, then i can sign my life away paying for tax and insurance. my favourite......

regards
