hi im new to the 340 ownership, i purchased the car a few days back with a fuel problem, the car is a 1.7 carb on a c plate.

basicly it dosn't seem to create enough pressure to feed or suck the fuel from the tank to the carb, i have a manual fuel pump which connects to the cam inside the engine i have 2 but they dont seem to work, (both could be faulty) but when i test them they do suck fuel in the push it out, but i dont know how much would be needed for it to produce enough pressure to feed the carb/engine.

in the fuel filter sometimes i can see black deposits, i was wondering if it could be the fuel lines???

what should i check? and i will test till sorted lol

or if the fuel pumps are kanckered can i fit a electric one?

Sounds to me like the cloth covered fuel hoses are perished, feel around the cloth (from the main lines that go into the box section to the fuel pump) to see if they are damp.

all the rubber fuel hose is new, could it be the silicon hose's that run through the chassis leg?

if the carb is lose or could have a leak at the base could this cause the problem of why the pump cant create enough pressure to draw fuel into the carb?

im stuck never done carb'd engines before lol

I've not known the plastic ones to go. What actually happens when you go to start the car? 1.7's have several common faults, but aside from the rubber hoses perishing, fuel isn't one of them.

For a couple of quid, I'd change the fuel filter to see if the new one fills with black bits too, as even if thats not the problem, it's worth finding out if they came from the old hose, or somewhere else. If whoever had the car before you fitted it, I guess theres a chance the black bits could have escaped into the carb too, which wouldn't be helping. Give us a list of symptoms, and we'll see where we get to.

I had a problem like this?

what i did was disconnect before the filter up front and disconnect at the fuel tank.

Then get a compressor of some kind ..foot pump what ever, then connect it to the feed with the red accery included with most foot pumps/compressers(for inflatable chairs etc) and blast it through!

you might have to do it a couple of times and there might be lots of white gurp that comes out (looks like egg white)

or it might not be this at all, but worth a try eh?!

well symtoms are

will start and run but will rev real high then drop till it stalls if u can manage to get fuel to the carb

no fuel getting to the clear fuel filter thats located between the black return pipe thing to the carb.

there is fuel to the pump and a little bit after the pump but im not to sure it is pumping well enough, if u put ur fingers over each end it will vacum but dont feel as tho it pushes anything out vry well.

new carb or 2nd hand one fitted that worked.

i tryed to clean it out with wd40 but still nothing

had to make a carb to inlet gasket as mine was fecked, made out of a bit of kellogs card.

help still needed lol

will a electric fuel pump help??

Nowt wrong with the pump!, well mhh maybe lol, disconnect the tank to pump line(within engine bay not total lenth) and hook the inlet on pump up to a petrol can then try it, making sure the tube that goes into the can is long enough. there should be a flow of fuel, if there is a constant flow, there isnt a problem with the pump but a problem with the filter-fuel line end. if so blow it out with compressor then if none of that works we'll look at the carb etc carb filter.

it was frustraiting for me the car would run ok then get out the gate and die everytime.. but yea hopfully u will get it sorted noproblem

Could be a blockage in the fuel pick up pipe in the tank or possibly the filter on the end of the pick up pipe may be collapsing causing it to block the end of the pipe.
