Leaded or unleaded?

Post by S10NPH » 14 Jul 2009 01:52 pm

I have just bought a 1980 Volvo 345. Does anyone know whether it is fine just to put unleaded in it, or do I need some sort of additive?

Many thanks!

VND, you may have to change your percentage dude, correct answer.

I really can't remember for anything whether or not the valve seats are hardened, but in any case, the advance is far enough you could well get pinking. Super at minimum, lead additive I think you can do without but I'd double check that.

Super to be safe.. but my '82 343 ran fine on normal unleaded without pinking at all, but not sure if that had any alterations done for it to run on it (doubt it!).

A 1980 car wont even have Renix though... points & condenser!

Plus, we need to see pics :D

Bah, well I've never had a problem running pre-unleaded cars on unleaded.

On the subject of fuel, has anyone here noticed any difference running the 340/360 on high octane performance wise?

what engine do you have?

B14.0E till B14.2S have the soft material in the cylinder head so they need at least RON 96, 98 unleaded will work fine, 95 with lead additive wil work fine but don't fill them up with unleaded 95.

b14.3 and up will do fine on unleaded 95

You quite sure buddy? Renix's were retarded half way through B14.4E's here from memory, which would be 86/87 ish.

it's not about the renix allthough all b14.4's have renix and some of the late b14.3 models were equipped with renix.

b14.2 is the last cylinder head wich has the softer valve seats, b14.3 and on has an "uprated" cylinder head with reinforced valve seats to cope with ron 95 or even ron 91. b14.2s or lower don't have that so they need leaded fuel
