keep 340:sell 440

Post by srtames » 23 Feb 2005 02:45 pm

I would sell the 440 if it hasnt had a clutch as will cost £700 to do it as its engine out job (like vectras and mondeos) . They can also be unreiable on electrical faults. Put the money into restoring the 340 .

So basically a clutch going on a 400 has the same effect as putting Hugh behind the wheel of a 300 LOL

Clutch change on a 440 shouldn't need engine removal, I did my brothers 440 turbo clutch in the road out side the house. the subframe has to be lowered, but you can cheat here and just drop the passenger side of the subframe down (loosen the drivers side bolts too but dont remove them) then the gearbox can be slid back far enough to change the clutch. do be carefull with the driveshaft on the passenger side though as it is very easy to knock the roller retaining clip off the tripod joint as it goes back in the diff, which will result in 25 hardened steel pins falling into the gearbox (cue much swearing and a gearbox stripdown to remove the rollers, this one is from experience and its not a nice one!!) 440 gearchange gets hiddious with age, check the spring on the linkage rod is still there and check the bushes in the linkage at the gearbox end as they wear very quickly, it's identical to a renault 5 box and linkage and has all the same problems. That said, the gearchange was never 'good' even when new.
I also happen to have a 440 clutch sitting on the shelf in the garage just waiting for a new home.......

so is there a 'quick fix' for the awfulness of a 440 gearbox?

haha thanks for the encouragement guys..

the 440 is my dads so i dnt really need to get it checked out, its in mint condition as my dad drives it so carefully at about 10mph lol

it was ex company car, he bought it of his company who spent quite a few bucks on it n they serviced it well...

my dad changed the clutch before or was it the exhaust i cnt remember i was small then...
but yer its done a 137k

my pops has a good mate at kwikfit, hopefully if the clutch goes at 150 il get it fitted cheaply there...

yer my 340 has a fuel leak :(

its spraying out, i also noticed that this pipe from the air filter (or so i think its the air filter, cudnt see in the dark) has broke off

im going loughborough on saturday morning this cnt b happening to me!!!!
