I once won an item by 3 seconds - I'd forgotten how slow dial-up was, having just got back from uni
I know plenty of students who 'scrounge off the system', but if you ask me that's a reflection of the kind of people they let into university these days. My experience has been in general that those with the least money (whether that is students of those in poorly paid jobs) do the most 'illegitimate scrounging', apart from kids with rich parents, who just whinge until they get bought a new Saxo. We could get into the psychology of that, but I reckon if you either work hard (or very little) for your money, it affects your perception of it. I was reading somewhere that a huge proportion of 'accident helpline' style claims companies' clients are on the breadline...
Remember we're all spending our own tax - I've not 'paid in' as much as Hugh, but it must be well into four figures - and I don't pay income tax (don't work enough). I had one flatmate a couple of years back who got a 'hardship grant' for running out of money, and was smug that he'd scabbed £500 out of the system (yes, these kind of people are out there!)...until I pointed out that every time he puts petrol in his car (the car being the reason he was in this financial mess!) he's paying a huge proportion of tax, every time he has a pint, every time he buys a new PC...the 30% or whatever income tax he'd paid in his gap year. There's no such thing as free money, and I think they ought to point that out on 'accident helpline' style TV ads - kinda like the smoking health warnings!
Sure you've just got a £10k payout for the phony injuries you didn't receive in that car accident. What about the single mother who hit your unsafe car (rotten seat mountings), who can't afford the insurance now due to this incident, and now can't drive to her job or take her kids to school. BL**DY GENIUS I'D SAY!!! Obviously there are legitimate injury claims, and I'd make one if I had to, but I'm quoting a real scenario that happened to a friend above.
Phew! Rant over...
cheers
