Is this phase one of 'project redblock'?
I don't suppose you had it anywhere near a dyno? Ok, STs and mk5 GTIs are lardy, but still...that made my jaw drop a bit. I guess a 2.0 on 40s may well be making 180-odd bhp, and weighing in at just over a ton...it probably would trouble them. I'm thinking I might need to put a 2.3 in the 343 at this rate...

Yeah it's a shame I didn't dyno it, I'd say about 170hp, but 45s would have really brought it up. Focus STs are about 175hp a tonne, and the one I raced had a passenger whereas I was alone. Still, awesome performance for an old volvo, I think I may regret selling this monstrous thing.

Not with a whiteblock you won't. Different class of engine. Porsche designed heads, capable of 10krpm without too much work, and far stronger than the Frenchies. Y'know they got 325bhp out of the 2.0 touring car engine in the end...more impressively, with an 8k RPM limit? Awesome.
Don't get me wrong, the F7s are an excellent swap, and suit the 300s very well...but you won't look back if that's where you're going. Redblocks have their charm, and they're ultimately stronger than the whiteblock...but there's a lot of work to be done. It looks like we've just caught a lucky break with Ryan's 740 (big valve 531 head for (relatively) cheap), but getting even a good 8v head like the Volvo one to compete with even a factory multivalve head isn't easy. The lure of a T6 (2.8 24v twin turbo) for 7/900s is pretty obvious when they'll make as much power as a fairly well worked over redblock when totally standard, and with full torque from 2000rpm. It takes commitment to stick with a redblock in that context.
