After over 26 years, we have decided to part with our faithful 1989 Volvo 340GL 1.7, which has genuinely covered 107,419 miles.

Last year, I introduced our car to Volvo 300 mania when we were seeking replacement parts...
viewtopic.php?f=83&t=15804
and indeed, we have been very fortunate in having been supplied with good quality parts that have kept her going. We have all the MOTs and receipts for work carried out and apart from the usual consumables, the only body part that has been replaced was the bonnet, which Volvo agreed had prematurely started to rust. Recently, a front suspension cup rusted and the suspension leg (beautifully refurbished by classicswede), coil spring, shock insert and balljoint were all replaced. In addition, as the exhaust was blowing where two pipes meet, a new exhaust comprising the middle and rear sections was put on two weeks ago. There are no tears in the roof lining, the seat coverings are in a good condition and we are non-smokers.

It has been regularly serviced and the cam belt was last changed on 6/2/13. The MOT is due 1/3/16 and there were two adviseries at the last MOT: Nearside and offside rear brake pipe slightly corroded. Rust bubbles are in some of the usual places, e.g. rear wheel arches, front valance, below windscreen on driver's side, bottom of doors, on front wing and bottom of rear hatchback and there is a hole in the front horizontal panel between the two front wings that connects to the top of the grill. I have taken photos and can put these on if that would help. According to the bills/MOTs, welding includes plates on the outer and inner sills, and attention to offside and nearside rear suspension spring mounting prescribed areas.

Meanwhile, we have noticed a smell of petrol when the petrol filler pipe is filled to the brim, which we found on our 1988 340DL was, in that case, due to a perished pipe that was replaced. The bulb that shows the lights are on is not working (main beam and others are ok) and bulbs around the heater controls are not working. The lumber support on the driver's side is not working and one of the wheel covers is missing. The black gutter trim is cracked. The two connections for the headlamp wipers/washers have been disconnected as we have found them unnecessary.

It comes with front and rear Volvo solid plastic mats, a Haynes manual, two spare wheels and various other 340 spares will be included with the car.

Our car is located in South Shropshire and if you have any questions or require further photos please ask. As a guide, we are looking for the best offer over £500.

Very fair price for what looks like a nice example, and has obviously been well cared for.
I wish you luck with the sale but not sure you'll need it.

That's very kind of you. Despite the ageing body, she still feels taut and is a joy to drive in our hills.

No problem, the body looks a lot nicer than any of the 300 series I've owned/own.

Hi Colin.
I would have though a nice 3 door would be worth more than that.
Why not keep it as a cheap classic car.
Cheers Mark.

How's about 10 of us each chip in £50 and we buy it for the forum with a 10% timeshare so we each get to have it for 6 weeks of the year ;-0. Ok, the insurance, tax and MOT might be harder to sort out but I'm sure someone with some storage space and scheming ability could work out how to do it ;-0

Actually, it would be easier if someone just bought it ;-0

I agree with MCHUDD. I'd say its worth closer to 2 grand and somebody might pay that to race and wreck it so its worth being careful who you sell it to.

I was going to say a 1 owner 3 door with full service history would be worth more than double what you are asking.

Hi Mark, bogbasic and 360beast

Sadly storage is an issue.

Many thanks for the advice. I've seen several requests for 340s/360s by new members on other sites that I decided not to respond to. Indeed, I also had a bad feeling that their intentions were not for the good of the car.

Regarding the estimated value in current condition of >£1000 to £2000 :o
I was not sure how much to ask but I am hoping to sell her for a fair price to someone with the knowhow and appreciation for these classics who would then be able to invest in her rather than strip her for parts or as you say race and wreck her but those figures are a surprise. However, if that is the case, and I can find someone reputable, then it looks like they could be getting a bargain.

Colin

Reminds me of my parents old montego that they sold to a hotel for driving the laundry round their chalets etc. (so they knew it would be in good hands and not abused). Had a meal at the hotel a year or two later and this old destruction derby car parked at the window by our table caught my eye - yup, it was their old and now much battered and abused car (sporting painted on rally car numbers).

Wish they'd stuck with the metallic navy blue 340 they had :D If only your car was a 1.4 auto I'd have probably plagued you with questions by now, so good luck selling it and hopefully those interested will buy it from you soon :)

Thanks whoozzem

Very true. It wasn't any easier when I had to part with my 1988 340DL 1.4 (manual 4 speed). However, that got lighter every time I drove it

Good luck with your search for a 1.4 auto, my dad had one. Apart from the whine of the CVT, it's what originally attracted me to 340s and we bought our first 340 in 1985 without taking a test drive or even having driven one. :D
