1986 340GL 1.7 For Sale

As part of my late father's estate I have for disposal his 1986 340GL 1.7 at £200. 91844 miles on clock. Failed MOT in 2011, uneconomical to repair, but has been kept garaged since. For sentimental reasons would prefer it to go to someone who could make use of it rather than the scrapman, though the pending sale of his house might mean that is the route it has to take. Completely unroadworthy so would need to be trailered away. Located in CF82 post code area. V5 now in my name.

Sorry to hear about your father.

What did it fail the MOT on and what work needs doing to recommission it?

It will help prospective buyers if they know what work is involved.

I have been attempting to locate, amongst my father's papers, the original MOT documents from March 2011, without success, but remembered I had photographed them at the time and archived the photos to CD. The photos proved equally difficult to find amongst hundreds of CDs. The results, slightly abbreviated, are shown below

Date of Test 10 March 2011 Mileage 91837

Failed on exhaust emission with a CO reading of 13.12%

Reasons for Refusal of a Test Certificate

1 Windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid
2 Offside rear (chassis leg) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
3 Ditto for nearside rear
4 Ditto for nearside front
5 Offside rear (shock absorber turret) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
6 Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive

There then follows a series of advisories

RBT Park brake efficiency: 16%

7 Windscreen has damage to an area less than a 40mm circle outside zone A
8 Nearside headlamp deteriorated but output not reduced
9 Ditto offside
10 Front exhaust has a minor leak
11 Nearside rear shock absorber has slight corrosion to casing
12 Ditto offside
13 Nearside rear lower shock absorber has slightly worn rubber bush
14 Ditto offside
15 Nearside front upper (strut turret) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not excessive
16 Ditto offside
17 Nearside front lower coil spring mounting corroded but not considered weakened
18 Parking brake - only just met requirement - needs adjustment/repair
19 Drivers door hinge worn
20 Drivers door mirror held in with tape
21 Rear wiper blade deteriorated
22 Small cut in offside front tyre

There are two further advisories - the photos are too out-of-focus to read

I presented the car for MOT and know the tester quite well. Afterwards he said the car could be worked on sufficiently, at a price, to pass the MOT but it would never make a satisfactory vehicle. He recommended scrapping. The car was returned to my father's garage where it has remained since.

I would be willing to negotiate asking price

Dearest reader, a nice person has requested "Hello bog. when can I see your car?" . I would love to meet up at some stage but probably/possibly it is too late now. Due some mental health issues, I have been experiencing a great paranoia of everything human and will instead supply a picture here:

If I can be of assistance with anything, please let me know. Currently consuming Risperidone and French Brandy as medication, which seem to help, but the psychiatrist will, no doubt, assert that I should reduce my consumption of the latter. I am hoping to be able to drive again in 2 - 3 months, but I might try to pass an advanced driving test or something like that to try to convinvce myself and others that I am a safe driver, which I semi-always sort-of thought that I was anyway, but unfailingly had some issues with attention to the proximity of the car in front, if you see what I mean. Sorry for convoluted language, but pompous old woossies speak like this sometimes when they get carried away with the sounds of their own voices in their heads, modulated with the annoying sound of a loudly revving engine, and we will understand it all one day, but convincing those we trust that anything we say is sensible, is a battle that cannot be won, for the time being, at least. God bless public transport, which I have found can be surprisingly efficient, with a bit of forward planning. Keep praying that one day the bed will not pull anymore.

P.S. If Dai trailored it to his place, I'd give you the £200 to save it from being scrapped. Any photos? Colour? 4-door? One option is that I quite like doing these cars up (and the points on which yours has failed seem relatively minor) so if I can't drive anymore, doing them up and passing them on might be a viable (but not profitable ;-O) career option ;-0 ;-0 ;-0 ;-0

Dai, would you store this guy's car till I'm finished with the red one? It should then be ready to either return to its original owner (Shropshire) or an owner who could look after an epically well-restored 3-door (note, I prefer deep blue 4-doors myself). Thinking that if you could store this guy's one for a few months.... then you trailer it from your place to mine.... then trailor the red one I've restored back to Shropshire (they will kill me, but if I can't drive, I think the original owners will understand and will appreciate the prowess of the electronic power steering, which really, really is fab).... or you might like it yourself?? Then I could fit EPS to the Cardiff guy's car and restore it, if I like the colour (sorry, car racist here). Does any of this make sense?
