Re: Servicing costs
I'm just pointing-out that it's not ok to do as you please without giving some regard to the neighbours who have to look out of their window to see a Mercedes Sprinter parked on the road with its engine swinging from a hoist with pools of diesel and antifreeze running down the kerb...

Re: Servicing costs
I would hate for this to be the first thread that gets locked on here... can we please resort back to having reasoned discussions without deliberate personal attacks at people based on assumptions.

Well said Steve.
+1.
Re: Servicing costs
Sorry, I don't follow the drum solo reference. Clarification would be good please.
I'm amazed that you're quite happy for someone to come on here and state garbage about us being a little rock hurtling through space so live as you please and do as you like regardless of the effects on anybody else, but then criticise when I challenge that view-point by saying that actually we can't do as we please and should consider the effects of our actions on other people.
Seems a bit one sided to me lads, not to mention a little over the top in the way of political correctness...

Re: Servicing costs

Re: Servicing costs
Well, we are on an unstable, nuclear armed, war torn, insignificant rock, run mainly by liars and crooks, who spend our taxes on porn and ducks, flying through space WHEEEEE! - I'll do as I see fit, if anyone objects they're welcome to but I might not listen - If you are offended by mechanics going on in the street that's your choice to be offended, a waste of time in my opinion, I say live and let live, you say do only what I think is acceptable - where you get these big ideas where you make the rules and others have to abide, after being born a baby and growing to a man you really think you have the right to tell other men what to do and how to behave when not incredibly long ago you were soiling yourself and eating worms, putting house prices as a reason not to do repairs in order to save money in a capitalism-savaged world... stop this feeble attack, I owe no-one anything, have never caused injury to one single person (a bloody nose at school but he was asking for it for months) and taken a lot of injuries myself without scorn. I value my freedom, and everyone elses - seeing a car be repaired is not a harm to freedom, becoming offended by that repairing and putting a stop to it, that IS a harm to freedom.
I'm not a perfect man, nor do I live to be, but before you start pointing your finger better make sure your hands are clean.

Re: Servicing costs
A few minutes before the above rant was posted I voluntarily deleted my post about logic. Now I'm not so sure......
Yes fine, we'll all do as we please with no consideration or thought for our fellow man. Hang-on, isn't that how wars start...
Top idea that..
I'm making no further comment on this post out of respect for the sensitivities of those who don't like any form of heated debate in preference to the notion that we all follow the herd...

Re: Servicing costs
I guess I started it. I'm a bit of an anarchist
, and I do have respect for other people, I have different ideas over what is right or wrong and how tolerant you should be of other people - I'm not saying theres no need for responsibility given our universal situation, quite the opposite - you really should be a gentleman in the original sense of the word at all times (ensure those around you are as comfortable and content as you are yourself).
Well, I went a bit hammer and tongue and for that I feel glum. lack of self control, not everyone will agree to my opinion and I shouldnt try to force them, by doing that I break my own philosophy
.
Sorry for saying soft, heartless. that was below the belt and should have been worded more aptly, didnt realise how cold it sounded.

Re: Servicing costs
OK, one more post then...
I actually like these discussions and I don't take offence easily. I enjoy controversy and debate and if no one gets hurt I don't see the problem given that we should all be free to state our opinion although I agree that personal insult should be avoided, as should any reference to subjects which would rightly cause offence such as race, gender, religion, disability etc. However, I fail to see why the moderators may find it necessary to lock a thread simply due to differing opinions about spilt sump oil on the road..
Maybe CBA and I should start our own debating society (but if he brings his pit-bull I'm bringing my ex-wife...)
Oops, hope she's not reading this, I'd hate to cause offence...

Re: Servicing costs
Ha Ha! Boy this posting went off tangent didn't it?
I used to do all of my own servicing, mainly because I ran MG's three decades back and they'd always break down. One had to learn to do stuff pretty sharpish. But even back as an obnoxious yoof I saw the error in using kerbs as axle stands when changing the oil.... Home servicing is fine if you have the space, time and inclination to do it but sometimes time just plays against you. I'd love the 25 hours days that some people seem to find, but between work, school runs, doing the house up, there isn't too much time left. Personally I'd rather give my car to an independent garage than restrict time spent with my kids or mountain bikes! And the comment about getting mucky with car fluids hit the nail on the head for me. Don't forget the odd flake of rust in the eye, or stubborn bolt just as you've dismantled half the car. And Darling, this is Surrey - the road is full of Range Rovers and Porsches on HP for life; they'd call Social Services if I lifted the bonnet on my Volvo.
My comment was that last year my garage charged over 50% less than they do now, and really that kind of price hike is just plain silly.
And the fault with my car? Fuel related - some sender went awol. I'd narrowed the problem down to fuel starvation, but I'd never have found the bloomin' sender at fault. By the by though I've discovered a back street garage that specialises in old cars. They are a mine of information - stuff you don't encounter doing it yourself. I like proper garage mechanics; I just don't like labour rates hitting £75 in the independent sector. I don't think I was ripped off at all - the bill was pretty clear as to what they did, but a tad unexpected.
Oh yes, I also discovered that high tension cables bought off eBay corrode to Hell and back within a year. All the connectors were corroded to such an extent they fell apart when I removed them from the dizzy.

I blame the Volvo 66 estate I had......
Re: Servicing costs
I dont have a pitbull
. I have a wise siberian husky, a crazy-cute siberian husky puppy and a formidable genius of a hebridean wolf-dog (opens doors, cupboards, the cooker, fridge, dug a HOLE through the front door to get to the husky
(naughty wolfie!), so were expecting husky-wolfdogs (Sibredean Wuskie Dogs?)... far better than one fearful-aggressive pitbull...
And I don't wear trackies!and have no tattoos! my hair is past my shoulders, and I have a beard - I used to ride a Marauder (clicky ankle to prove it, hence the respray on the mudguard(Car pulled out, pulled brake, tyre was on gravel...SKID -> SMACK! -> was expecting asphalt)) before the hoodies nicked it while it was sorn and not insured... £3000 "VANISH"
(615 miles on the clock)
anyway, that choke adjuster needs turning, engine should be cold enough now.
---
If you weren't expecting to pay it... then it's a bit of a rip off, if they'd said how much, I bet you would have shopped around.
