More power does not necessarily mean more noise, you might loose 10hp with silent exhaust, but just up boost and you have 20hp more without changes to sound level, well without major changes to sound level.

Problem is NA motor, where you can't up the boost and power comes with rpm mostly, so you need to rev the thing to make it move, which of course increases noise, with turbo motor you don't need to rev it if designed to be torque monster and as all know, torque is what makes car move.

So I believe that turbo route would be better for car that is going to have decent audio system, but if I remember correctly your steering and brake system is causing some headache here compared to our situation where those are other side of the engine.

Do you already have a budget? I would like to recommend plan thing first on paper and estimate some costs, so you would have then easy targets to aim for when buying stuff and saving up, my guess is that this would also speed up progress, maybe plan few stages I, II, III where to aim?

It is only two months that you need place for car? Is your local council trigger happy with old cars without MOT like some places in UK, where some mint condition old cars have been crushed by council (or what is your local authority called)?

Your car still is relative good condition, works without problems etc. it is harder to find such each day, remember that you may regret selling it because of this, ask VND, he knows

It is rather unavoidable at these days that we all have to use fwd daily, just get something that does not inspire you at all so you don't spend any money on it unless needed, that way you will have more to use to your hobby car. My french crap was/is too quiet, so it inspired me to start improving it's sound dampening even more, put some 200 euros worth of sound dampening on it, sure it is very quiet now, but that money would of bought new motor for 360 for example and certainly french crap still is french crap

fucking car!! earth bolt that holds earth to starter motor and engine block fell out so couldnt start the thing (only found out after i got the car home, lucky there was a slope to bump off) so i thought make sure all the other nuts and bolts are tight and the live plastic thing to starter motor snapped sm2 sm2 sm2 so now im hoping superglue and duct tape will hold it together as i need the car tomorrow morning urgently
does anyone know if i can buy just the solenoid( i think thats what it is ) on its own? as i cant see a way to just replace the plastic that holds the connectors in place

You can buy just the solenoid, a good place that rebuilds starters and alternators should have one. Or if you fancy a trip to the scrappy most smaller Renault engines that have a similar starter should work.

haha my attempted ghetto repair failed on the solenoid that i first tried - ducttape holding the live back down with plenty of glue ( durr bad idea as manifold is inches above  ) im pleased to say that the solenoid off the volvo in luton helped! impressive as it stood for 4 years in a soggy shed, car got me 150 miles to college no problem! got 110 out of it too ( on a private motorway, downhill  )

and jtbo, thank you for all the input its all been taken into account, really appreciate it :D. in reply - i dont really have a budget yet as i dont even have an income atm (big empty sainsburys next to college though, bloke said loads of vacancies, just need to find my NI number to apply) me being 17 i change my mind every hour on what im gonna do with the car, so far im doing the "fix passenger sill and finish off driver's side sill on thursday and friday" as i cannot bring myself to sell this car. not only have i become so attached to it, most of my friends love it and recognise it think its the most epic thing in town, they made a fanpage on facebook and everything lmao!
anyway! 17 year old mindset right now is saying this: "keep car, fix during the 5 days of the week i dont have college, save up untill new year (thats when i get stupid amounts of space - barns, big pig stys etc) and buy the most solid 1.7 i can afford/find and drop a renault 19 lump in then go from there"

Just don't do what I did and just get stuff, build, find out need more stuff and have empty pockets with car not working order

Planning is good, when you know how much money whole thing will need it is easy to save up that sum, then multiply it by 1.5x and save bit more, after that if something unexpected happens, it is not much of problem, if there is no unexpected, then it is possible to do some extra or drive lot more

I spot one problem in your plan, as these cars are rather old already, it is quite problem to find solid one, most are already dead, so good ones start to get up in price, maybe not yet there, but here prices have been skyrocketing in past two years.

Also there are many 'solid' ones, which might look fine, but when you get the car and start examining it bit more, there might be quite lot of repairing needed to be done.

I have always bought cheap junk cars, what I have found out is that if car is not totally rotten and runs rather ok, then at least I know what I have, but when I buy new one, it is for certain, that I have to put car's price to repairs in first year, even more sometimes, then it comes to bodywork that needs some attention, my 240 was almost rust free low mileage gem, which in reality had serious rust issue after a year, front to back full length, on both sides floor needs to be built, boot needs lot of new metal etc. It was a scam, car was rotten crap, just sprayed before sale so that it does look better than it is.

So problem is you can end up better or worse, but you will not know it at first, dirty tricks are made so that car looks better than it is. That is why I have started to think that it is often cheaper to pour more money to car you have than use same sum to get 'better' as often car that you have can be made much better with that same sum.

However when you have only one car, it is out of question to slowly build that, so you need another, just be prepared that solid one has few holes to patch too, it really does not make huge difference from rather decent ones, unless you are truly lucky chap

Almost been there myself with the Bug but i stopped to investigate, was a close call. Lesson learned though i'll never do it again.
Looks like you've been pretty lucky hopefully it's not caused too much damage, could have been a lot worse. Probably get raped by your insurance company now though :(

On the brighter side, thats going to look mega when you've dropped it on the deck. You've got bigger balls than me

well luckily the people whos car my wwheel flew into were really nice and just asked for my number - it was a mark 5 golf and one of the bumper strips just got knocked off i was too stressed out to check how badly damaged it was but shouldnt be more than 50 quid to have it professionally resprayed, if im lucky the black marks were hopefully just the rubber that can be wiped off
going to cut another coil tomorrow and parents making me take it to get the tracking checked out so thatll be interesting

cheers 340pw
