Newbie, few questions.

Post by Robbie_Roo » 13 Aug 2011 07:41 pm

Hi guys!

Here's the deal I'm off to uni and I would like to get hold of a 340 or 360 I'm not entirely sure of the differences so bear with me :)

The 1.7 version is the one I'm looking for, to save time this is essentially what my plans are.

I'm going to be studying motorsport at the uni and would pretty much like to get as much power out of the lump as I can with old fashioned tuning methods ( I hear you talk of port polishing etc)

What should I look out for when buying one of them? Different model styles? Places where they rust? What is prone to breaking?

I look forward to a helpful reply!

Thanks

Rob

1.7 is a 340 mate. 360's have the 2.0 Volvo engines in. 1.7s are popular for people putting the renault 16v engines in. Have a look around in the projects section, you'll find loads of info. Stuff to look out for, 300's are prone to rust, sills and jacking points mainly but check places like the bottoms of the A-pillars, behind rear lights and front valance. I'd personally say avoid a sunroof, mine's gave me nothing but trouble. Not really clued up on trim levels but i'm pretty sure DL is lower than GL.

Also check for rotten spring cups and theres alot around that have been messed around alot. My advice would be to get an unmolested one, but not necessarily a mint one.

Where are you going to uni?

Stafford.

So apart from rusty spring cups (i'm guessing the front) what other things should I look out for?

Sills and jacking points as nimmiz said. Check all the usual for cars. These cars are getting old now so anything can be wrong, theres been enough time for the some back repairs etc, just make sure you look out for things and you'll be safe. They are great cars and no major design faults

Actually.

A chap I know has an old capri (twin webber 40s or something) he said he will shove some of these webber 40 carbs on and port the head, bigger valves etc.

I'm wondering what sort of power is attainable from that engine? Without turbo'ing etc.
