1984 Volvo 360 GLT, good for a first car?

I'm from Australia, and I'm about to get my P plates soon, so I'll be able to drive by myself soon... yay.

I'm looking at a Volvo 360 GLT hatch, from 1984. From what I can tell, it is in good working order, the owner let me take it for a little spin, and it drove great. Only 170,000 kilometres, and 5 speed manual, electric fuel injectors, 4 cylinder, and comes with safety certificate and is in "excellent mechenical condition". We are going to have a mechenic check it over, just to be sure

However, one disappointment - it doesn't have power steering. I had to actually use my muscles to turn it around corners (boohoo ) instead of just driving comfortably. Also, is there anyway to move the steering wheel up?

In your opinion, would this be a good first car? Thanks.

The 360 is a fun car. Who needs Power Steering anyway...that is just for wimps.

I have a 1986 360 GLT hatch and It is the first car I have owned since passing my test, makes a great first car.

1984 GLT is somewhat rare beast, specially if with B19E motor without Renix ignition, for good condition car of such here one would have to be ready to pay quite bit more than normal amount, but that is if seller knows that, there was not many made with this combination, only earliest 360GLTs are such and I have seen only one of such which was mint condition and had price tag of well over 2000 euros.

There are so few of them that original good condition samples left today are probably less than a hundred in total in whole world, oh and I surely want one, rarest of them all 3 door version naturally, sadly I'm too poor still

I think those cars were made from 9.83-9.84, or maybe less time, but it was only a year or less, imo. Anyone knowing better is free to correct.

Definately! Not sure if you are in a rainy area but the only real problem with 360s this old is rust, anything else can be fixed. I had a UK 84 GLT 3dr, think it was the fastest 360 I ever had, gave you a real kick up the arse when you booted it. Loads of low end torque, hope you get the high compression version in Oz.

Only real reliability problem I had was the fuel pump fuse box behind the battery. If she ever dies, check that.
