Volvo 340 Vario Virgin

Post by baron_matt » 30 Oct 2012 03:29 pm

Hi
I've just purchased a 1986 Volvo 340 CVT its Slate blue 340 DL 3 door. I'm totally new to Volvo 340 ownership, although I did have a volvo before which was a 1971 Volvo 144 DL about 8 years ago.

Can anyone advise me where I can get things such as Vacuum pipes and other spares for this car? I'm keen to make it 100% and I need to track down a few bits.

1st the feed pipe for the Servo looks a bit frail where it joins the inlet manifold, does anyone out there have a spare or can they advise what pipe I'd need to change it? Is there a standard rubber Fuel hose that is the correct diameter?

CVT hoses, I'm trying to track down some pipe for this as the vacuum feed pipe from the 4 way valve to the clutch disengage servo has a crack in it. Its a hard clear nylon pipe can anyone tell me what diameter and where I can get some from as I don't want to disturb it unless I have replacement pipe handy.

I've got a strange fault where the speedo works but the mileage doesn't increase. I'm guessing I'll need to remove the instrument cluster to resolve that, is there a method to follow? I also need to replace a couple of dash bulbs as they are non functioning. Anyone know what type they are?

Window scraper seal, I need one of these for the drivers door as the original keeps falling off. Can anyone tell me where I might find one?

Many thanks for any help and advice :-) sm4

Hi Matt,

Welcome to the world of 340 ownership - and welcome to the world of the variomatic as well ;)

I have no diameters at the ready, but fuel pipes are not air tight and therefore useless as a replacement for vacuum pipes. Hopefully some people 'in the know' can point you in the right direction.

You can remove the instrument cluster by removing the retaining strip that holds the upper part of the cluster in place. By removing the cover in the footwell, you can undo the speedometer cable (press and twist) and the two large connectors at the back. With a bit of twisting and turning you can actually push the cluster out through the steering wheel - if you want to save the hassle you can remove the steering wheel as well. The odometer has probably suffered some broken teeth due to a careless person pushing the reset button while driving.

Yes the cars on the street are...erm all mine. The Red car is a 1973 Citroen Ami 8 with a Trafficlutch (centrifugal clutch), the Bronze one is a 1977 Austin Allegro 1500 Special and the Volvo you know. I've also got a 2CV which is in bits as I restore it.

I purchased the Volvo as I needed an Auto after breaking my foot but I've fallen in love with it though.

If anyone can advise where I can get a replacement for the servo pipe I'd be grateful as local Volvo dealership just looked at me with open mouths like I landed from Mars or something when I asked.

That is normal for a modern Volvo dealership, just wait until you start asking them for a CVT clutch plate....
