Ah. If you havnt passed your test, get on as a second driver.
Insureing a 17 year old with no licence from cold is probably always gonna be a big premium.

yeah thats not a worry, as far as im aware, the bloke on the phone said it qualified for classic. so i presume it is  as far as being a learner, i never bothered to get insured on a car till i passed but it only took 6 weeks for me to get a full licence so it wasnt much of an issue. if you get your theory out of the way asap and book your test as soon as your instructor tells you to, i managed to have 2 1.5hour lessons a week at one point so if you can afford it, try to get as many in as you can. that way youll be on the road in no time :D

i seen you was thinking of doing a side exit on your 340 i wont bother tbh dude ive done it and it doesnt increase ground cleance beacuse the pipe has to go under the chassis leg as you cant cut throu it becasue of BIVA and the middel box isnt up to the job on its own very loud haha
what ive done it run a single box in the gap a the side of the gearbox and under the axle does make alot more room and if that dont make sense i should have some pics if you want to see

progress soon to come on this, the car will be used for drift days at various tracks around the country in the summer :) i've got a few plans for it fabrication wise, and would like your feedback/suggestions on the following:
- Solid engine mounts - was just thinking of getting tube section the same length as the rubber section and welding on 2 bolts either end, (hexagonal section to be inside the tube part) is this a good idea? i know i havent explained clearly what i mean but i might make a diagram later to help explain this.
- exhausts, not really sure what to do about this, im tempted to just buy loads of pipe from merlin motorsport and route it through the trans tunned then straight out the back with a bike can on the end if anyone has pictures of alternative exhaust routes to standard this would be greatly appreciated

cheers! pictures later :)

much simpler mate!

i run solid front engine mounts from POM, a low friction polymere. it's roughly the same thickness as original mount, exactly the same length as an original mount but with a 10mm hole through it, so you can run a single M10 bolt, works a treat!

Solid engine mounts :s

This is a straight 4, not 6, there is an inherent imbalance. No wonder you Dutchies keep getting fracted mount brackets

yeah but a piece of tube and some bolts costs £0.00 from college, unlike the poly mounts from dai which are 18 quid ea IIRC

here are some pics http://forum.volvo300club.nl/showpost.p ... stcount=78 i made them in advance from the build, but while assembling everything i feared for them being uncomfortable so mounted NOS original ones but the movement due to the torque of the B14T was so immence that it ripped a NOS original mount in 50km, decided to mount the solid ones after that and they do it for me. it's not as uncomfortable as lot's of people state, the car shakes a little bit at idle and that's about it, once you rev a tiny bit it's like stock. and even more important, the engine stays in place

i still run NOS on the rear though, don't think these are as easy to make as the 2 mounting bolts don't line up, think that will require a plate welded at one end to run 2 headless bolts with the socket side cutoff and machined slightly thinner to function as locating pins. or there should be a huge coincidence that the bottom slots on the subframe's mounts are the correct height and line up with the holes on the bellhousing but i'm not too sure on that.

cheers for the link anjo, i see what you mean now - i too am only planning to make the front two mounts solid as they are pretty bent on my one (just took one off to get dimensions)
here is a quick design i made, complete with dimensions, feel free to use :)

*sigh* wish i was as enthusiastic about doing my assignments at college as that only took an hour to go from idea to design

Re: my first car* 1.4 1990 340 work begins

Post by valman » 15 Mar 2011 06:59 pm

made the mounts today:
first got some tube, this was slightly narrower than the standard mounts, but thats no worry. also made end caps out of 4mm steel with a 10mm hole
Image
started to file a taper onto the end caps,
Image
but this was taking forever, so out comes the lathe to make the tapers (this is so that when they are ground flat there is still plenty of weld holding it together :D
then welded that together:
Image
chuck em into a lathe to machine them flat:
Image
job done!
Image
Image

now i jsut gotta fit them. next job is to flush and bleed the brakes
followed by perspex windows for extra lightness :)

Re: my first car* 1.4 1990 340 solid mounts done

Solid engine mounts? How is it? Super easy to make them out of hokey pucks, so you got some movement, had that on my drifter
If you are going drifting a welded diff is the first and best mod to do!

the diff will be welded soon, maybe in the coming weeks - the weather is getting nice so doing stuff outside is easy now :)
decided to make solid ones for the front because they cost me £0.00, and i dont have hockey pucks to use
