Welcome GBosch!

Ali - I have a econ gauge which works, just not properly, that you can have for very cheap. You might think that's a bit of a cheek, but I have a use for the parts from it you see...

The kits (econ and ambient temp) sell for £50 a pop. Not cheap, but then it takes a LOT of time to find them, and they are always in big demand! Look out for 'blueline' special editions in scrap yards...they had them as standard!

cheers

Nah, what have you done to yours? I had a quick look through the pics but only saw the sound system in your car, was just a nice bit of spray paint and a new gearknob on mine, gets bloody cold in the winter and too hot to hold in the summer though!

Yup.... exactly like mine ;) Great minds!! I haven't got a picture to hand, in uni at the mo... I've got a gearknob that looks very similar, then new gater and did the surround (and the rest of the dash) silver. Doesn't look as bad as it sounds :D I'll post up the pic that Pete took at Gaydon later!

bloody hell the whole dash! wouldn't mind seeing pictures of that! Whats your boot build? looks like ive got competition! Really need to invest in some 6x9s, my amp decided not to work on the way to uni today and it made me realise how unclear the 8" subs and horns are! Hopefully its just a problem with the switch in my dash for the amp but havent got a screwdriver at uni to get the panel out!

Ali - 6x9s and a sub? Nooooooo! :) You only really want to use drivers that big if you need their bass response, which you don't since you've got a sub. Having said that, some cheap 6x9s sound better than cheap small drivers, but that's just because the larger cones typically have their resonant peaks (which nicer speakers won't have in the same way) at lower frequencies, which sounds less obtrusive.

The gauge moves and all, but it doesn't read the 'correct' value, and it doesn't move over the full range. I can bring it to the Brum meet (and you can see my fully working one), and if you like it, it's yours for a fiver.

cheers

Sounds good to me, as long as it moves i dont really mind! How much of the range does it move over? I hope you don't mind i added you to my msn so that I could try and find out more about it without filling the forum with off subject stuff. What would you advise for better sound on a budget then? Mine might look big but the quality of sound has got rubbish lately, when the amp was off today (meaning no central sub) it sounded so unclear and the 8" subs had no bass at all. Noone i know has changed their front speakers but a friend has kenwood 6x9s on high pass filter hooked up to an amp and it sounds really clear, i was tempted with the JBL 6x9s because they are only £30 and would match the sub. At present I have 10 or 13cm components in the front door (SPLX yuk! but red so match the car and cheap!) i tried an old pair of knackered 6x9s in the doors but magnet wouldnt fit and i could work out a way to get the window winders past the 6x9 even if i did pad it out!

In terms of clarity, it's the fronts you need to sort out. I don't even have rear speakers, that's how important I think they are :) It all rather depends on budget, but the cheapest way might be a set of add-on tweeters (there's an excellent Sony set at £20) to put up on the dashboard.

I think we covered everything else on MSN :)

cheers

Ali, Next time I'm on MSN I'll get your address of James, I'll give you a run down on what I have done, my complete setup has cost £105 so far and for that price I'm well happy. I'll let the others comment on the sound quality, it could be a lot better, but sound deadening, and an amp are the next efforts.

£105 is a bargain for the way it sounds :) You're quite right - you need a power amp. There's one listed in the 'for sale' forum, but the seller is a right dodgy geezer... :-P

cheers

Picture of Kar's dashboard, (thanks Pete). Slightly different now, full complement of gauges, it's been cleaned, and the headunit has been replaced for the old Volvo one (new one in when I move though) and probably some more things I've forgotton!

Theres blue LED's in the door handles and the footwells, and in the bit in the middle infront of the gearstick (so you can see your phone at night when you get out!) And a steering wheel tweak is currently on the desk! (Foggy reminded me what I had originally said I was gonna do... and forgot!)
