Jani, the planes are *very* close and shot with 300mm lenses ;) Do you have any airshows or air displays near you?

For the other bit, the manual should say "Exposure Bracketing" I'd imagine

Ex:

You'll have no trouble with a D40 then, Jani!

If you have photoshop you just align the two images (easy if taken with a tripod) and create a gradiented layer mask (it's basically, I guess, a software ND Grad filter)

I'm using GIMP, maybe it has something similar, but I don't understand anything about masks, I know layers only, maybe time to learn those then

I don't know about airshows, this is small country where any extra CO2 production is considered as vandalism these days, so if there is air shows, then those can be last ones to visit until they ban them completely

While I was frying sausages at open fire (finnish tradition at this time of year) suddenly I did hear sound of plane, I saw small plane which was very very silent, like it would had electric motor, had my camera in car so grabbed it and took few pics, but I had only 50mm lens attached so even it did fly very low altitude there is barely a plane in picture.

If I would had 300mm perhaps I would been able to take first good plane shot, it was blue sky and light was from proper angle, frustrating those situations. Good 18-300mm might cost more than my heart is able to whitstand

Also I was taking photos of birds, when I heard odd sounded car to come by and as I was almost next to road took pic from it, auto focus just could not keep up, so I got perfectly blurred photo of 1920's hotrod, which are not too common around this part of world.

Just another nothing works day :?

First test of exposure combining, trees in wind are bit difficult, I got some ghosting there and some places do look like after emboss filter.
Image

In GIMP, simplest thing to do seem to be using eraser and two layers. In that photo select by colour seemed to perform quite well so it was rather easy to make selection and use eraser.

To get good results some serious work is needed, at least with my current skills that are about non existing

That was how my driveway was around 11PM here.

Looks good! Do you have the original normal exposure image so we can compare?

Here are images that I did use. I think that combined image matches more to what I did see myself, but ground should be bit lighter. I did experiment with different exposures so I can make test #2 :D

Edit: I did made #2, but trees have moved even more, at least that it what I think, it does not look too good when there is some movement happened in picture:

Qtpfsgui is your friend, Jani. And it's Open Source! (I've never tried it, but a friend of mine swears by it).

Just a quick snap from today (not HDR, I had to climb a fence, so left the 'pod in the car!)

I did test that program and I think that with those previous shots GIMP is faster and produces better results, but it could be that I can't get best out from that program.

Nice dark sky in that photo of yours, polarizer?

Ok, I think that now I got it what Steve did meant using masks and layers as I found this guide for GIMP:
http://www.gimpguru.org/Tutorials/NDFilter/

Instead of making copy of existing layer, just use another photos with different exposure and there will not be ghosting even leaves have moved a bit during photos.

Previous method that I did use did combine two images together with some transparency, this mask method just gradually replaces image with another based on what kind of 'filter' you draw. Best would be of course to use good ND Grad filter like d3k4y0 is using, but I guess this is poor men's alternative

This one is only scaled, no cropping or any other tool were used

Image
Scaled, antialised and slight clone tool abuse, surely you can't spot where clone tool was used  Well it kind of asked for it

Still first one looks to my eye even more unreal, kind of

Does anyone has a trouble with CA (chromatic aberration) ?

I find this plugin to be really handy when trying to fight against CA, I don't know if Photoshop has similar:
http://kcd.sourceforge.net/fix-ca.php

Also while looking such tool I found that there was special version of GIMP available:
http://www.gimphoto.com/

It is different from GIMP but still similar.

maaaaaaaan, that ones good.

the last pic almost looked like a 3d computer generated model.

but the humanity youve captured in that one is unmistakable.

Good work dude.

I think there a warm imperfection in that one thats irresistable.

like a flower bent too far too one side.
A natural and uncontrived asthetic attractiveness. Rather that something generated and created after the fact.

A+.

^Thx :D

This is School of some sort, one driver shows example of how to drive, there was constantly people running red lights and quite lot of traffic so I managed to get only 1 shot without cars and it was no good at all, so this one have to do.
Image

Different angle would had produced prettier colours, but there was not enough space for 18mm and I wanted to capture whole building and athmosphere of that place, bit of compromise again :?
