Main Beam not Working

Kris (KrisSWFC) called in today so we could have a look at why the main beam headlights were not working on his immaculate (actually his dads) 340 1.4 GL

Basically everything was fine, except the main beam was not working (not even able to flash).

1. Checked fuses.
2. Swapped relay for mine..relay fine and now working in my car.
3. Wobbled electrical plugs either side of fuse, no effect.
4. Removed steering column plastic cover to look at stalk...result.

The bottom screw which holds the stalk on to the column had dropped out and so had the electrical contact.

I wish all electrical problems were that quick and easy to find!

Very nice 1.4 5 door GL, with good red paint (not the usual pink)!

This car really is as good as it looks in the photographs, very original and low mileage.

Anyone who went to the York Railway Museum meet or VOC BKV a couple of years ago might remember the car.

He tells me that he's thinking of maybe putting it up for sale in the next couple of months as his dad's hardly using it, if so I can vouch for it's condition!

When I did read subject, I guessed that it is the stalk, that fault is always stalking around these cars.

In my 360 there is previous owner repairing on this, some tin can pieces put there

That car in photos is looking incredible, belongs to temperature controlled windowless storage / museum :D

Yes, the little plastic bit had also broken but was still there in the plastic trim panel, I expect that slid out and that's why the screw came loose. A regular problem on these cars. I've repaired mine with a metal strip, which started to short out to the horn ring and make it come on when the wheel was turned! A problem I had to sort out before putting the car back on the road. The stalks still are not quite right on mine, the indicator is a bit close to the dash and the self cancel doesn't work. I'll get round to fixing it soon!

Yes the car is very good, amazing for this country of dampness. I think it was garaged all it's life.

Andy

It was really good to see you yesterday and thank you for your help with this!

Let's take the cars for a run in the peaks in a couple of weeks.

Cheers

Kris :340:

Yes, I'd like to get the GLS out for a run, it's M.O.T. is OK and it's insured, just need to tax it from April. Only thing in the way is that Gold spares GLS. Since I loosened the steering rack, the front wheels point in different directions and it's very hard to push  It might have to be a run in the 340 if I don't get organised, but at least you'll be able to keep up :P

Anyone else in the area fancy a meet?
