Hi, i have just bagged myself a little drift rat play thing, its a 1988 Volvo 340GL 1.4 5dr 5speed.
I was wondering if anyone new any performance specs, eg. bhp, torques and such
Also i would like to find out which MK it is? after scouring the wikipedia page i can only guess its a 2nd gen facelift? making it a MK3? im not sure though! someone please help!
i am also interested from seeing on the site, about the F7R engine conversions, as more sideways action would be great!
Cheers, Jon

Hi mate nice to hear about the 340! First thing you want to check if you are drifting is your engine mounts, check if the engine has much play on its mounts as due to the design of the propshaft any saggy old mounts are going to cause you havoc when clutch kicking, even with the standard engine! Here is what saggy engine mounts do to your prop:
Theres a lad called
classicswede on here who sells a few performance parts including poly front/rear engine mounts so its worth looking into.
I've got the F7P engine in my 340 running on bike carbs and it is so much fun, good laugh sideways! But make sure you keep a spare prop shaft handy

welcome mate!
'88 would be a MK3. There's loads of info on here, have a good search around. I think Jon-ovlov has made a thread on everything involved in the f7r swap. I don't know anything but a 1.7 bellhousing will be needed. Not too sure on the performance specs but i'd not bet on them being correct 25 years since production.
When i first joined i learned the most from reading through other people's projects

Haha brilliant, Thanks for that, il check it on the weekend. Thinking about it the engine does have a bit of movement when reving hard! but as i say il have a look.
I was wondering about which model i had as i saw on a thread somewhere that changing the engine to an F7R or P if you had a mk 2 or 3 that you didnt need to change the subframe?
does anyone know where the best place to look for a F7 engine would be?
finally, being new to forums how do you pop pictures on a post??
Cheers! Jon

Ill dig the thread up mate it is a pretty straight forward swap as far as engine swaps go but you need a few 1.7 componants such as the clutch and bellhousing as the 1.4 ones don't fit. And if you are fitting the F7 to a 1.4 you need to change a subframe as the front mount points are different (correct me if I'm wrong...)
Edit: Here you go pal;

I've seen an F7P for sale recently, a lad called Ross I think he is cindral on the forum he had a nice engine going for sale although I'm unsure if he sold it or not - Keep an eye out on eBay though I've seen a few going.

Awww, not an invite
Early 1.4's are different, that one will be the same. One of the rear engine mount upright brackets (mounted to the subframe) will be different, the 1.4 has two pressed tin ones, the 1.7 has one in cast ally for extra stiffness whilst being able to clear the clutch arm from memory. Realistically, both need changing for something man sized along with the rubber mount there anyway, so it wont make much difference in the long run.

Ah I'm learning lol I'm 3 months into the volvo scene

(first car aswel actually! Always had motorbikes) - Makes me wonder if my 1.4 has the tin mounts or if it was swapped over when the prev owner did the swap.

-Just to clarify yeah when I did my conversion and wrote that, I had to swap the subframes over to the later one, which should be highlighted in the ow too. You won't need to, as yours is a MK3 it will have the later frame.
Also Chris, I never had to modify my rear mounts to clear the clutch fork . . .

this has been a great help! cant wait to get to sorting a new engine now, i have tried ebay but couldnt find anything? il keep looking, I belive the F7P engine is a 1.8 128bhp and the F7R is supposed to be a 2.0 150bhp enigine? is that right, is the F7R more difficult to fit being a 2.0 litre? and is it much hassle changing the ecu's? do you still have a working speedo too?
Cheers, Jon

As far as I know the F7P and F7R are both similar if not almost identical to fit? Waiting on Chris to pull me up on that one though
I thought the BHP figures were higher than that, though.

S'ok Dean, I've been playing with them a snadge longer, I'm only taking the mick.
Jon-ovlov is right, the tin one clears, it's what I have in my B18FT. However, it's not as strong and does flex more than the cast item, the cast one noticeably has a cut out in it.

Search "how to fit an F7R" on here. I've done a guide (STILL a work in progress, I still need to finish it and get my arse thoroughly into gear) but that covers most of the installation. It is the same method to install the P or the R engine. I went for the R as it had more power for the same effort if that makes sense, and I found mine for a good price.
Speedo is as standard (cable so no ECU plug in needed), but you'll need to either make a wiring loom or get adam (username: 340GLT) on here to strip a clio one down for you. You'll also need a speed sensor if you want the engine to idle correctly when stopping from high speed (EG pulling off the motorway). This means that when you stop from said speed, the ECU knows you are not moving, thus idles at approx 1000rpm.
Everything up to engine ECU wiring should be in the guide.

Thank you! Again this has been a great help and am looking forward to taking on the challenge, how much do you think would be a reasonable amount for a F7R engine? I know there are many variables to the price such as mileage, age servicing etc. but I don't want to overspend and get ripped off on one!
