Speedo cable for mk1 dash

Post by filthyjohn » 21 Jun 2011 12:14 am

When putting lovely new refurbished struts on my 343 I managed to FUBAR the speedo cable, does anyone know for sure if it's just a smiths cable the same as a mk2? I could take the clocks out and look but I don't like surprises.

Hi John.
Yours will be a smiths one. The bit that goes into the clocks is different than the VDO one.
Cheers Mark. sm4

Hi John,

according to the catalogues there are various types of RHD Smiths speedo cable:

3298994 (3294916) RHD <CH 746066 (some time mid-1983 MY)
3202421 RHD > CH 746067
and
3298996 (3294918) RHD Sweden <MY79
3203795 RHD Sweden >MY80

I've never understood what "RHD Sweden" is for, as far as I know they changed from RHD to LHD in 1967. If you want to try it out, I think I have a NOS 3203795 somewhere ...

Cheers

Thanks, I'll remove it and have a look. The car's an '82, with the mk1 interior, I guess it could be either of the first two types.

Oh aye that's right, Swedish letterboxes changed from the right to the left overnight, leaving many 'brevbärare' at the mercy of householders' dogs.

Dude, 'brevbärare' is Svenska for 'postage-man', I was referencing the Svenska change from RHD to LHD and somehow implying that rabid attack dogs would "sic' em" more easily during the changeover.
