Want to elaborate on what it's doing?

could be the diff, torque tube or even just the linkage mounting, all more common faliure point than the gearbox.

Yeah, for all people say the box is weak, I've never actually heard of a knacked one. I'm sure the Scandinavian turbo brigade smash them regularly but have you seen rally Finland on the telly?!

Mate said this

When I was driving down the motorway in 5th it just poped out half way so I poped it back in and then about a mile down the road it happened again but would not go back in.
I carried on using 4th but when I slowed down and had to change gear it would not let me select any gear at all. The engine is still running sweet as a nut but it will not select any gear with the engin one or off, sometimes it pops in but if you try to put power on it just revs.

Also can you use 1.7 boxes

The 1.7 boxes have a different casing, you'll need a 360 one I'm afraid. As for the problem, check the gear linkage isn't damaged or misaligned.

Aside from the popped out bit, that sounds like a classic case of the weld for the linkage breaking at the front (i.e. by the gearstick)

I've never had to fix the repair, but a search will help, it's been covered in detail a while ago. It's worth a look at least!

Tbh I don't think it's the linkage, I've had one break on me before and it always stayed in gear properly - just felt severely sloppy and loose!

I would definately be checking the linkage first too, it's not a big job to strip the centre console back, but if it feels like it's engaging the gears then it wouldn't be that, a broken linkage mount makes the gear lever feel extremely sloppy, normally to the point where the gear lever hits the centre console before you can engage gears.

next i would be draining a tiny bit of fluid from both the gearbox and diff, not all, just a splash, and cheking for metal filings, if you've got a strong magnet put it on the drainbolts for a while first, that will draw any filings towards it. a spec of steel here and there is common enough, but sparkly oil is bad and indicates a problem
