360 Renix Required - 414

Sadly my 360 (b200k) doesn't want to start and I think I've narrowed the problem to the renix unit - does anyone have a spare?

The part number is 414 A.

Thanks!

Hello, according to this thread, you have some alternatives that differ by only a degree or two in the advance / retard business.

Is a 411 any use?? Might be able to help, if you are abso sure it is the Renix. Have you tried cleaning or ideally changing the flywheel sensor? To be honest, I am a possessive old so-and-so so it'd probably be cheaper to look on the bay or ask Tom Butterworth or one of the other breakers on the bay. You could try replacing just the coil part since there are dozens of new ones on the bay.

Myself, I'd bet a dollar to a doughnut its not the Renix.

Are you getting rev counter needle movement while cranking? Not sure if that works in the 360, otherwise check the rev counter output at the coil (round studs), if nothing there then suspect the crank sensor, check its resistance. It is there then suspect the coil and check its resistance. Don't forget to check its got power.

The crank sensor contacts can get corroded in the renix, but its very rare, you can just solder the wires directly in. Most likely is the coil or the crank sensor itself.

You must be psychic - I only just checked that 10 minutes ago and mine starts fine with no rev-counter reading till a second or so after it fires so I think its not a viable way to check the flywheel sensor on a 360...

Thanks for the help guys – I ’d been through Mac’s (excellent) diagnostic guide and these were the results:
-No spark at the coil output during cranking.
-12v at the renix and a good ground.
-Crank sensor resistance (160 – 280 ohms): 290 ohms

Separated the coil from the renix:
-Test lamp across the coil contact blades flashes during cranking and stops flashing if I unplug the crank sensor.
-Coil contact blades (0 ohms): I forgot to note this one down but IIRC it was >8k ohms
-Coil primary windings (0.6 +/- 0.2) ohms: 0.7 ohms
-Coil secondary windings (4 +/- 1.5k ohms): 6.5k ohms

I’m assuming that the renix is at fault as the coil is within tolerance (though it seems a bit odd that the test lamp flashes during cranking). I’ve cleaned the contacts between the renix and the coil and they appear sound.

I’ve tried Tom Butterworth but unfortunately the closest match he currently has is for a 1.4 and I’m not sure I could get away with that. No spares or breakers on ebay at the moment though so I’m a bit stuck!

OK, so the resistance between the blades which contact the coil is much too high?? I PM'd a couple of phone No's.

The renix is outputting but either blades or coil have a problem. Coil secondary is a bit high.

Give the blades a rub down with some rolled up fine wet and dry.

I'm still on the look out for a replacement Renix unit if anyone can help?

Ideally I need a 414 but may try substituting for another if none are available!
