Hey guys, i guess its time i got off my ass and sorted out a 5 spd for my car, im not entirely sure on my diff ratio so will go and check later when im not so tired lol. but if some one has a 5 spd and diff then that would be cool, so any ways im looking for a 5 speed box and maybe a diff depending on what people have, dunno as of a price i can afford yet but would anyone be willing for a part exchange lol.
Cheers Dan

I can get hold of a 5 speed gearbox and diff from a 1.7 340 if I'm quick! I don't really have the time to pull it before the car goes, but it's a shame to let such items get weighed in. Let me know if you're keen asap.

Cheers for the offer but i dont think a 5 spd from a 1.7 would work on mine as its a 1.4, shame as i really want a 5 spd as high speeds in 4 spd are impossible lol.

If you get the 1.7 one I'd be happy to swap it for my spare 3.82 transaxle. I fancy longer gearing...

I wouldn't recommend a 340 1.4 with the 3.64 diff, go for the 3.82 box, the ratios are faaaar better suited for the small engine.

3.82 == late 1.4 5 speed. That is what you want, and what John is offering, so *if* Pete can get teh 1.7 (which is a fair ask, it's not a 15min job...) then the mass swapping debarcle would be ideal for you.
John, which you thinking of putting a 3.64 in?

The 340 when I get round to arranging some m0ar P0wah. God knows when that will be, can't find any donor cars. My box has been pretty empty of oil for a long time, and I can't get the filler plug out to do anything about it.
Got to point out, the one I'm offering as a swap is a good condition 60k miler that I pulled from the knacker I just scrapped.

Just to update everyone, sadly I couldn't get the gearbox and diff. Time was tight and it was already on the ground with no wheels when I got to it. I got what I could of any use otherwise. If anyone is ever desperate for a brand new throttle cable for a 1.7 then I have one! I'll keep my eyes open otherwise though.
Cheers,
Pete

I have that diff in mine. and find it perfect for speed! and my 1.4 was rather quicker than my current 1.6 16v escort!

depends if you think of "quick" as acceleration or top speed. A 3.82:1 will invariably accelerate better (ignoring gear change points) than a 3.64:1. tbh I wouldn't want a stock 1.4 over a ton anyway, I can't think of anything more crap than "I got my license revoked in a 1.4 340".

I hated the 3.64 in the 1.4. Compared to being in 1.4's with the 3.82 they felt terribly slow in every gear, and only being a 4 speed as opposed to the 5 speed meant the top speed was slower too... although it'd still do a ton at a push
It'd be worth doing the swap to a 3.82 for just the better in gear acceleration, nevermind the added benefits of an extra gear!
