Engine blew?
Engine blew?
Hammering sound that rises with RPM, big end bearing or crank bearing?

Re: Engine blew?
yes quite likely. Have you checked to make sure the engine hasn't inhaled something it shouldn't? Take the plugs out and crank it over. Could also be a cam/valve problem too I guess. It depends where the noise is coming from.
Re: Engine blew?
Sound is heavy, not very light, I would say it comes from engine block, but can't really say for sure, valves do need adjustment as they rattle a bit, but that should not cause this heavier noise, I think?pettaw wrote:yes quite likely. You need to click play, it loads, then click play again when it appears, you can hear sound at end of the movie.

Re: Engine blew?
i'd say crank or big end bearing, because the engine is still very properly running on 4 cyl. if there's a valve or head problem it won't.
can you feel if the flywheel is still bolted tight trough the hole in the bellhousing?

Re: Engine blew?
I can't find it being loose, at least couldnt move it even with tools.volvodspec wrote:i'd say crank or big end bearing, because the engine is still very properly running on 4 cyl. if there's a valve or head problem it won't.

I'm not happy camper
Sound has been there long time already, but it is now louder. Car has not been used for quite a while.

Re: Engine blew?
is the pulsair system loose?
how does the starter motor (and flywheel) look like if you remove it? does the starter motor engage and disengage smoothly (the axial motion to put the gear in the flywheel)

Re: Engine blew?
We did not get pulsair system here
Everything seem to be operating just normally now, starter works like new, gear comes off from flywheel as it should.

Re: Engine blew?
oops, finland sorry
with a loose pulsair hose it makes very similar sound
i don't have any other ideas wich would have solved themselves. can't be a bearing, that sound will only get worse
it's still worth lifting the valve cover to see if there are any unwanted items present, and a swap of engine oil + filter.
could also have been the viscofan hitting the radiator shield due to worn engine mounts
